Wow! That would certainly take a special person. I assume they are talking about men and women, which means, of course, sex and probably children. The possibilities are endless. Can you imagine a child born on Mars and growing up there, never knowing Earth? Given how relationships can be so fragile, that brings up many possibilities.

It would certainly be a major step to be able to accomplish this. When Mars is on the opposite side of the sun from Earth, communications will become very difficult, as the round trip time reaches hours. So, they would send an emergency message and it would take several hours to even get here, then that same amount of time for an answer to get back. So the settlement would have to be truly self-supporting.

I'm sure we'll get there some day, probably well beyond my time. But the idea is still very intrigueing.

The thought of fucking in a weightless environment is interesting.

Seriously though, I've always wondered why we stopped missions to the Moon. Too expensive? I'm pretty sure there's lots more we can study and discover there.

Space exploration HAS to move forward. And, no doubt in my mind it will someday. While NASA seems to have gotten out of the business, contracting with private launch companies is a good thing. So, a private company establishing a colony on Mars will still be a good thing for space exploration.

I don't think I will be around to see Mars established as a settlement.

I saw a documentary about it in German TV.
Mars is no place to live for a long time, but interesting to explore because Mars has an strange history.
Why is all the fluid (water) gone which made all the deep valeys?
& why did Mars lost his mangnetic field?
Was Mars a part of our planet system?
If not where did he came from?
Millions of questions, but no place to live for a longer time.

Mars One has a chance to be profitable when they do science in long time cosmic travell scenarios.
The Russians have a very big winning margin in that tech.
The Mars One company will fail, of course.

PS: Would be nice to have Mars holidays for lets say about 10 days? But the travel...5 years... urgh...

The government is already over 15 trillion in debt. Obamacare was ruled constitutional today by the supreme court so now we need TRILLIONS more for that....We're not going to mars or back to the moon or anywhere...The United States is doomed!!! :crying2:

Be happy, scott!

You are getting a health system for everyone, inclusive for the poor & broke Americans.
What do we have to expect on Mars?
Mars is only interesting for a few scientists & some science fiction fans.

& the Europeans? Today I heard a report about European banks.
All European Banks together have a debit of about 9.6 Trillion Euro , yes TRILLION! !!!
The European Protection Shield they wanted to open over Greece, Spain, Portugal, Italy & Cyprus to protect their broke banks is about 100 Bilion Euro.
30% of the German gross national product!
Who will be broke next? Yes it'll be us, we Germans are broke next & then good bye EURO.
What will be canceled, first? Yes the science & development!
Then the social infrastructure. Good bye good old Europe!

Isn't it better to have a good social infrastructure, including a payable health system, than giving all the money to the greedy gamblers in the banks, who are cheating on all their customers for more & more profit?

If Obama's health system works fine, it won't be that expensive.
The oppsite! Weak people cost sensless money.
Healthy people are producing income & tax & so on...

To give money to criminal bankers is like to throw it into a black hole.
We should let the bankers left broke and finance a mission to Mars, instead.
That's better. No profit anyway but a little bit more wisdom.

Yours :hatsoff:

Two movies about Mars...

Capricorn One (1978) with James Brolin, Hal Holbrook and Eliott Gould...

Total Recall (1990) with Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sharon Stone and Michael Ironside...

...And if you can't be with the one you love.., "Love the One You're With" -- Stephen Stills 1970
