Gotta admit, it was pretty nice to see football back last night. Fair game, not great, but first time in 8 years that Super Bowl Champ has not won the game. Go Cowboys!

At least a couple of pretty bad moments. Near the end, Dallas was 3rd and 2. A penalty cost them 10 yards. But, the replacement referees only moved the ball 8-1/2 yards, a pretty glaring mistake to me. I was surprised that New York didn't call them on it. Resulting play was still a decisive gain (15 yards,) but the Refs should have been called on such a lousy spot.

Then, at the end, Cowboys had 1st and 10 after the 2 minute warning. So, instead of manning up and playing it out, they pussied out and sat on it. Hey, Dallas, this wasn't the Super Bowl. it was the first game of the season. Man up and Play it Out!

I'm back, sorry I missed the preseason transfersand the start of the season. At the moment football is looking a bit tame after the huge excitment of the Olympics, not only did we host it but we did better than expected.
Internationally England continue to disappoint, beating Moldavia 5-0 was expected but being held to a 1-1 draw with Ukraine was below par.
Domestically Van Persie has fitted in well at Man U and I think that with his input they willl be champions this year(it pains me to say it).
Only others in the running are Man city and Arsenal.
Southampton after a hard start will do well to stay up.
At the other end of the League Portsmouth will do well merely to survive, but they have made it this far which exceeded expectations at one stage .
Celtic are a shoo in for the Scots title for the next 4 years as Rangers climb from the depths.

Hey Vectis, welcome back man! Hope it wasn't anything serious that kept you away from us?

Did you see Van Persie's hattrick against Southampton? Wow. And you mentioned Man United, Man City and Arsenal to compete for the title, but what about Chelsea? I think they're very strong with all the youngsters that play as if they've never played elsewhere, lol.

This weekend I'll be watching many, many, many matches again! Will post about it during or at the end of the weekend. :D

Edit: Just read the Nightmoves thread, so just ignore the first question. Image

Suggestion, GJ. Can you make those "after" comments a bit smaller? I can still read them. :rotffl: :nanah: :lmfao:

(Yes, just me being a smartass. But, really, you can make those bigger. It's OK. "BlindOldGuy, lol.)

Two big results last Saturday, 6-1 for Arsenal and 4-0 for Man United. I think we can draw the conclusion that Southampton is pretty bad and will relegate in May, lol. Why else would Arsenal have been able to score so many goals while they only managed to get 2 goals in the first 3 matches. Good to see they've only conceded one, which tells us their defense is much more solid than it was last year.

About Man United ~> Alexander Buttner! Image No surprise that Chelsea and City were not able to win, with the Champions League about to start.

Barcelona started without Messi, Alba, Iniesta etc ... easy 1-4 win against Getafe. Real Madrid was lucky to end the match with 11 players. Both Higuain and Ronaldo applied for a red card, the Football was horrible and why those players make millions and millions per year is a big mystery. Deserved victory for Sevilla. :D

Celtic 5th, Portsmouth with another loss ... and did you see Anton Ferdinand/Terry/Cole? Messi's 2012 statistics: 61 goals in 45 matches!

Ferdinand /Terry/Cole it's becoming childish, mind you the whole shaking hands business was dreamed up by some PR company.
The top 4 have moved into place in the Premier League already but i still don't fancy Chelsea for the title
Southampton having been promoted in two successive seasons have not had the time or money to assemble a Premiership squad, they could well become one of the yo-yo teams, too good for the Championship ,not good enough for the Premier, there are several.
For Portsmouth remaining in exsistance is probably all they can hope for this season, crowds of 11,000 will help.
p.s where did Alex Buttner come from?

Looooooong story, lol. It comes down to this:

He's from Dutch club Vitesse, which always ends in the middle of the competition (around 9th or 10th place). Two years ago some rich guy from Georgia ( country, not the US state Image ) bought the shares and announced "As of now, we're going to play for the Dutch title". His name is Merab Jordania, very close friend of Roman Abramovich and after several investigations by reporters it appears the Russian is the one pulling the strings. Deciding which players need to go to Vitesse and who needs to be in the management. In the past two years they've had 5 coaches and 33 new players, so you can probably imagine what it's like. Chelsea, City, PSG, but on a lower level.

Buttner announced he wanted to make a transfer. The bigg bosses decided he was going to QPR that also has a rich owner. Friends here, connections there, the Football world in 2012. The player, his father and agent didn't agree. Fulham and Aston Villa were next on the list and in August, out of the blue, the press release was a fact. "Buttner signs a 5-year deal with one of the biggest clubs in the world, Man United". Obviously everyone here in Holland was under the impression he would be Evra's substitute and didn't stand a chance of playing much in Manchester. But when we saw him in action this weekend; Football dreams do come true?! In the end, very shady deal though ...

(Dutch Competition: #1 Twente, #2 Vitesse. Only five matches played, I know, but still.)

Are we going to get another English CL winner this 12/13 season?

Another English CL winner doesn't seem likely after the 1st matches.
Man.City lost to Real with virtually the last kick orf the game and have to make that up in the return.and Man U and Arsenal weren't too impressive with their wins.
In the Europa Cup English teams did better.Tottenham with 3 goals disallowed will feel hard done by and go to Rome with a sense of grievance.
Newcastle with an away draw can expect to win at home, but Liverpool, where did that performance come from?
I think it says more about Young Boys defence than Liverpool as their start in the Premier League has been their worst for 50 years.

Sadly I have only seen the summary of Real Madrid against Man City. Obviously I had to watch Ajax play Dortmund, but after 90 minutes I would much rather have seen the other match in 'our' group. Did you notice Mourinho going insane, again!? lol I agree that Man United wasn't impressive, but Chelsea ... wow! I saw them against Juventus and loved it from the very first minute. Good to see their defensive style has changed, nowadays both clubs want to play Football and it went from one side to the other in no time. Juventus could be an outsider to win the cup. Yes, still a long way to go, I know. Image

Newcastle will easily advance to the next round of the Europa League, in a group with Brugge, Maritimo and Bordeaux. Liverpool has a fair chance as well, though Udinese and Anzhi are both strong too. Don't know what to expect from Anzhi. They got lots of publicity due to the political situation in their country/state and the major salaries they pay, but whether they're really able to compete with English and Italian clubs ... the only problem Liverpool has is the lack of a good striker. Carroll went to West Ham before they were sure of Dempsey. The club and player had an agreement (not in writing), but when Tottenham looked around the corner and offered a bit more money, the American went straight to one of the other London clubs. And now Suarez is the only one left. What's your opinion on Sterling btw, the new left winger? I've seen him these first few matches of the new season and I think he plays pretty Dutch, impressive. Credits to Rodgers for giving him this opportunity as he's only 17 years old.

Just saw Schalke against Bayern Munich, regular win for Bayern. Not too much spectacle. Tonight Barcelona! :D And tomorrow ... Super Sunday. Two huge matches in the Premier League and the Formula 1 Grand Prix in Singapore, though I have to record that last event as both Football and racing are at equal times.

Replacement Refs are ruining NFL games. I hope the real Refs come back soon. Did you see how Jim Harbaugh conned the refs.http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-shutd ... --nfl.html

Anyone else see the Monday Night Football debacle surrounding the last play?

Our European members might not understand what happened, but here's a link.

http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-400_162-575 ... spotlight/

The regular NFL game referees are in a battle with the NFL, so replacement referees are being used in the games. Basically, the Seattle offense, behind in scoring, threw a pass into the end zone in an attempt to win the game. The Green Bay defensive player very clearly intercepted the pass, thereby saving their lead and winning the game. However, the offensive receiver had his arm entwined with the defensive catcher, so the replacvement referees called it his ball and a touchdown. The play and call has ignited a firestorm of anger against the NFL and the replacement refs.

One Tweeter said "Would someone please tell the replacement refs that Footlocker called and they are needed back at work." (Footlocker is a sports shoe store where the employees all wear referree uniforms.)

What a debacle. You know, this conceiveably could carry all the way to the end of the season and affect the playoffs.

Another Champions League & Europa League round has finished. Most surprising result was Zenit's loss against Milan, which leaves the Russians with 0 points after 2 matches. And that after spending €90 million on two players; Hulk & Witsel. Bayern Munich lost in Belarus, 3-1 to Bate Borisov! lol Man United was lucky to have Van Persie (6 points now) and Celtic managed to get a win in Moscow against Spartak, very impressive. As for the Europa League, I think we can qualify Liverpool's defeat to Udinese (despite the Italians having a good team) as a shock? Same goes for Sporting Lisbon, 3-0 loss in Hungary against Videoton. You can guess what happend to their coach Sa Pinto, fired. Image

Vectis, what's the story exactly on Ashley Cole ..? Another Super Sunday coming up.

Standard v Anderlecht
Milan v Inter
Marseille v PSG
Barca v Real

... and there's Formula 1 in the early morning. Where is time when you need some?

Ok the superbowl is upon us again. 49ers vs. Ravens. I pick the Ravens over 49ers in a tight game. Ray Lewis has to go out on top, Baltimore deserves another championship. 49ers have 5, they'll be fine.

That's cause we've been using this thread for both American and European Football, which is what you guys call soccer. Image In case Vectis is up for it, I might start a new thread, one specifically for soccer. That way we'll all know what we're talking about, lol.

Go 49ers! :cheerleader: Image :cheerleader:

American "Football" is played primarily with the hands and only the occasional foot.

European Soccer is played with only feet.

Maybe we should call it Handball. :rotffl:

Go, Ravens

And Gert-Jan please do start a soccer *coughACTUALFOOTBALLcough* thread. I haven't been keeping up with it much but I'm still a Red Devil through and through :)
Just be honest with who you are and if you don't end up with any friends, good for you.
