Holy cow, Milik for €35m! I saw enough of him stinking up my Euro Fantasy team to know that's an incredible deal... for Ajax! The world's gone mad! I'm kind of a little surprised Napoli haven't tried to re-sign former hero Cavani. There were rumours that Chelsea had made a bid for him last week and I'm sure at Cavani's age, PSG would be open to selling him for a heavily inflated price.
You have to wonder about Arsene Wenger's transfer logic when it comes to the Lacazette bid. For a man who will forever be mocked for his infamous £40m + £1 bid for Luis Suarez, I'm not quite sure his bid of €35m for Lacazette will help his reputation. When you consider Lyon had already turned down one of West Ham's many public bids of €40m earlier in the summer, quite how Wenger thought bidding €5m less would secure his target is a question only he can answer
You almost get the feeling Wenger is playing a bit of a bluffing game with the fans once again. Making bids for players that he knows are very unlikely to succeed, but hoping that the fans will buy the suggestion that they tried and did the best they can, but wouldn't over pay for fear of risking the club's financial security. The problem is, the fans are more than wise to this tactic these days having been subject to it so many times in the past.
Mahrez to Arsenal does worry me a little. Leicester went into the market yesterday by signing Polish youngster Bartosz Kapustka, who looks very talented and a potentially huge bargain at just €5.5m. As a winger, you can't help think they might be looking at a potential Mahrez replacement. Having said that, a reported fee of £41m does seem on the low side when you compare it to other big deals this summer - I'm pretty sure Leicester could and should be demanding much more for the player of the year and key component in winning the title. I would also suggest that Mahrez could do a whole lot better than Arsenal! Even if it means another season at Leicester, I'm pretty sure he could easily get a move to say a Chelsea, City or United and even high profile clubs abroad - PSG in particular would seem an ideal fit for him.
I don't know if you caught any of Leicester v Celtic on Saturday evening, but wow, Mahrez looked in sublime form already and set to take the league by storm again this coming season.
Oh yes, just going back to the Man United v City game that was called off... I know the pitch was pretty dreadful, but would I sound very cynical if I suggested Mourinho pushed for the game to be called off through fear of losing to Pep before the season has already begun? After getting demolished by Dortmund in his last game, I would suggest that another drubbing by Guardiola, even in a pre-season friendly, would fantastically focus on Mourinho and already apply pressure!
Spurs played Juventus yesterday morning in Australia. Spurs have taken a pretty uninspiring squad of players to Australia (no Kane, Alli, Dier, Alderweireld, Walker, Rose, Lloris, Dembelle) and so saw us line up with 3 kids in defence including an attacking winger as left back lol. At 2-0 down after 10 minutes, it looked like a very humiliating game on our hands, but Juve took their foot off the gas and allowed us to keep things respectable. The second half was much more interesting as Lamela came on and stuck out like a sore thumb as by far the best player - he could have a superb season for us this year! We also introduced 16 year old Marcus Edwards who has been gaining rave reviews in the youth setup. It was easy to see why. For a kid of 16, he looks brimming with confidence and already shows hints of a very bright future. We've had rumblings that he's stalling on signing a long term contract with us and I'm sure there are many vultures circling to snap him up, so hopefully Spurs can work things out with him. There is no better coach to develop young talent than Pochettino and as we've seen several times over the past 3-4 seasons at Spurs and Southampton, if a young player has the right attitude, he's more than willing to give them chances.
Also Gert on your point of marketing - this is something I find so very strange about Spurs' trip to Australia. We're travelling almost double the distance of any other Premier League club this pre-season, which surely puts us at a big disadvantage to begin with. But then to rock up with a shadow team, just exactly how does this enhance Tottenham's reputation in Australia? I mean, any neutrals and especially kids watching yesterday aren't going to start pestering their parents for a Dominic Ball shirt are they! If anything, it would have turned all of them into Juve fans all wanting a Dybala shirt! I could understand it if we'd taken even some of the stars, especially Harry Kane, but then we'd have stressed his already exhausted body even further...
But then to add to that, because these players are not taking part in the pre-season friendlies, that then puts them out of the loop with the new signings and match sharpness. It's ridiculous to me and serves absolutely zero purpose. I only see bad points to this trip and can't think of a single good one.
