When serious things are happening that fast, you don't take chances, you take the safest option you can. Seems like I heard he considered trying to return, but felt safer heading for the Hudson. After all, he had 200 some odd people to worry about, plus people on the ground. If some idiot hadn't opened the rear door, the plane would have stayed higher in the water longer. But, as we know, everyone made it out. I was at home watching TV that day and saw it from the first reports. I remember sitting in my living room cheering as they reported that all were accounted for.
I can resist everything except temptation.
