Bitterly disappointed is something of an understatement after Spurs' first Champions League group game. A shade under 86,000 supporters packed out Wembley Stadium and created an unbelievable atmosphere. Unfortunately, the players did not respond to it and left us with a 2-1 defeat. Our early play looked great and we should have been 2-0 up ourselves before getting caught napping at the back, with Vertonghen making a critical error to allow the Monaco player onto his stronger foot to devastating effect. This should have been a wake up call, but startlingly we kept allowing ourselves to be caught out at the back.

As much as I blame the players for their performances, I mainly point the finger at Pochettino for going with such an open and attacking side. The biggest decision of all to play Alli in central midfield alongside Eric Dier was crucial as Alli (or Dele as he currently wishes to be known as) offers nowhere near the defensive cover that Dembele, Wanyama or Sissoko offers. It also took away from our attacking options as Alli's biggest strength is getting into dangerous positions. A friend of mine made a comment I think summed up the team selection brilliantly: Imagine Chelsea going into a game with Matic, Kante and Mikel all on the bench when fully fit and ready to play. It just wouldn't happen and yet that's exactly what we did in perhaps our biggest game of the season so far.

Still, there's a long way to go and hopefully we will still come through the group but it's going to be a much tougher task from here on in.

To answer a few of Gert's questions: With Stoke I think the problem comes with having maybe a few too many 'mercurial' players. Shaqiri, Arnautovic, Bojan are all players who look fantastic when things are going well and look good enough to play for any of the biggest clubs... However there's possibly a reason they aren't and that's when things aren't going well they haven't got the mentality to help the team grind out a result or at the very least up their efforts. I'd have faith in Hughes to turn things around, but they had a very poor end to last season and this has started in the same form. Bony looked ok, but obviously lacking lots of match fitness. He should improve them over the next few weeks.

Southampton are a curious one to me and honestly, I don't know what to expect. Not knowing much of Puel's history it's hard to say whether he could be another Remi Garde at Aston Villa or another Koeman. Encouraging signs in the Europa League last night, but it seems fairly obvious they are missing a top quality striker. Pelle maybe wasn't an outstanding striker but he'd always get a good return of goals. Leaving themselves with just Long and Austin, it looks very light indeed. Add in the departure of Mane and there is a huge cutting edge stripped away that hasn't been replaced. I'm looking forward to seeing Boufal in action though as he could be a brilliant signing for them.

Fantasy Football - remember guys that as there is the Chelsea v Liverpool game tonight, the deadline for transfers and team changes is later this evening!

My return of 89 points is I think my biggest ever single game week points return, so I'm certainly very pleased with that! I wasn't so confident at half time of the Everton game though lol. I was seething that Lukaku still hadn't scored and in jest suggested that I fully expected Bolasie to get subbed on 59 minutes (and thus miss out on a clean sheet point), Lukaku to not score and Defoe to nick a winner to take away my clean sheet lol. Thankfully for me that didn't happen and Lukaku's devastating hat trick in 11 minutes left me feeling very pleased ;)

Just the one transfer for me this week and one I made on Saturday night (so can probably guess who!) I'll be relying on Everton again v Middlesbrough but certainly not expecting the same returns! I'm kinda tempted to captain Benteke at home to Stoke as they really did look woeful against us last weekend. Zlatan has to be in with a shout also against a Watford side that has already conceded 9 goals. And of course Lukaku who tends to score in patches and so cannot be ignored against a similarly leaky Boro side.

Should be a good game tonight between Chelsea and Liverpool. Plenty of potential for goals, red cards and incidents! Plus it should give us an idea of where both teams are in relation to their real league form.

Can't go without mentioning Manchester United losing 1-0 to Feyenoord yesterday in the Europa League. United's starting 11 cost a miserly £385million to put together, so no wonder they came a cropper. They should have spent some damn money in the summer rather than keeping the chequebook locked away! I mean, how can they hope to compete on such a tiny budget compared to the other teams in the competition? :rotffl:

Sparkling week of Champions League football! Barcelona's Messi (3 goals, 1 assist), Suarez (2 goals, 1 assist) and Neymar (1 goal, 4 assists) all looked like players from a different planet, while Bayern Munich, Man City and Dortmund destroyed their respective opponents as well.

Dutch side PSV Eindhoven lost 1-0 to Atletico Madrid and we have Martin Atkinson to thank for that. The English referee wrongfully disallowed a goal, wanted to make up for it by awarding striker Narsingh a spot-kick for diving (good for us, but laughable decision) and in the second half he missed a blatant handball from Atletico defender Diego Godin, so we should've gotten a second penalty! We were the better team and actually controlled the game. Diego Simeone is still working on integrating signings Gameiro and Gaitan, so it was a bummer to see PSV not get anything out of their first home match. I don't fancy us reaching the knock-out stages with Bayern Munich also in this group, lol.

Man United's budget is 10 times as high as that of Feyenoord and they tried picking up the maximum result with minimum effort. Mourinho made no less than eight changes to the starting XI and they never really had any intention to play some decent football. They sat back, waited to see what the opposition would do and were hoping for a chance on the break. Feyenoord manager Giovanni Van Bronckhorst, however, tightened things up at the back and aside from a Zlatan free-kick in the latter stages, no other real highlights worth mentioning from United perspective. Feyenoord's goal was offside, but it doesn't change the fact United got what they deserved... Paul Pogba particularly put in a lacklustre display as he lost possession on not one, two or three, but at least a dozen occasions! That makes two defeats in a row for the arrogant Mancunians.

Liverpool have won at Stamford Bridge for a second successive year after goals from Lovren and Henderson made the Reds go 2-0 up before the tea break with Costa banging in his fifth of the season in the second half. Antonio Conte has lost his first home league game as a manager since January 2013, ending a run of 30 games without defeat! I thought David Luiz looked as awful as we all remember, especially his passing was just horrible. Hazard took a day off and has mustered two goal attempts in the last two matches, whereas he managed 14 in the opening three gameweeks! Having listed all of that, Jurgen Klopp and the Pool players deserve a big compliment for another excellent performance.

The thing I don't understand is Conte's approach regarding defence. He has always set up his teams in a 3-5-2 formation and now he's sticking to 4-1-4-1 which has so far only led to a clean sheet against friggin Burnley. Why not actually opt for 3-5-2 with Ivanovic, Cahill and Terry or Luiz at the back, Alonso and Azpi utilised as wing-backs, while Hazard and Costa can be the men up front? Matic and Kante in midfield with either Fabregas or Oscar to provide creativity. The way it is going now won't work as their upcoming schedule looks like a nightmare and surely Costa won't keep delivering goals at this impressive conversion rate.

Fantasy football is all about having fun and the safe bet would have been captaining Zlatan, but I decided to take a punt on a City player. I just couldn't resist their deliciously looking home encounter against Bournemouth after defeating them 5-1 and 4-0 last term and with the recent performances in mind as well. Captain Kelechi Iheanacho! This could either be one hell of a differential to fire me into the top 100K or it could end up being an epic fail, lol. I won't gamble like this every week though. Image

Make that three defeats for the arrogant Mancunians! After the embarrassing defeat in Europe I think everyone expected United to bounce back against a Watford side who have been leaking goals like a sieve. Unfortunately, they did not expect to meet a determined Watford side who for large portions of the game outplayed Mourinho's expensive robots. Once again, Rooney stunk up the place and despite Mourinho going 'all out attack' with a front line of Rashford, Martial, Zlatan and Rooney, they did not gel at all. Martial looks very unhappy and I would not be surprised if he angles for a transfer in January. Ibra looked like a very tall 34 year old and was consistently out paced when chasing anything over more than a few yards. Meanwhile Rashford is stuck out wide, which whilst he performs ok, it's certainly not his best position.

But it's the inclusion of Rooney who causes all the problems. Him being selected meant that Mkhitaryan was once again on the bench! Mata, on the bench! Herrera on the bench! Carrick... well you get the idea! The list of sins continues: United have made the world's most expensive player a defensive midfielder for goodness sake :wtf: And not a very good one as was highlighted by the enormous amount of space that Watford's sub Zuniga found himself for their 2nd and 3rd goals. Did Mourinho really not have any instructions for his team to counter Watford's subs or did the players simply not listen to him?

My feeling is that after Jose's last season at Chelsea, his all empowering aura has disappeared. Up until last season, we thought that Mourinho was a manager who commanded instant respect from his players; they could not cross him or face the consequences no matter who you are. Just ask Iker Casillas for example. But that all changed last season when perhaps the players who we most thought would never ever turn on him, did exactly that. If the Real Madrid players turned on him, so what we expect that of them. Same with any other team. But Chelsea? This IS Jose's team. When that happened and Jose lost the battle in the quite embarrassing public fashion it did, you wonder if perhaps the United players already know that if push comes to shove, it will be him who leaves Old Trafford and not them. After all, if Mourinho cannot drop Rooney despite it clearly effecting the team, then who can?

Maybe this is just a blip and I'm reacting too quickly. But the signs are already there. Pogba is coming under immense pressure and scrutiny and you can see it mentally effecting him already. But if Jose continues to waste his talent, then what can he do?

The other thing to take into account is that after Fergie left United the feeling of impending doom also left with him. Teams suddenly went to Old Trafford feeling like they had a chance and not thinking they had already lost. After City made them look like kids, Feyenoord in Europe and now Watford handily showing how it's done, then maybe teams have already shaken off any fears of Mourinho's United? Time will tell...

I've gone on far too long about United lol so I'll skirt over the other results/news. Spurs huffed to a frustrating 1-0 win over Sunderland. Pochettino decided to go exactly the opposite of his disastrous Monaco team selection and drop all creative players in favour of his three big powerhouses in midfield. He also oddly shunted Dier back into central defence and pushed Vertonghen into his disliked left back position. The game went pretty much as expected with Spurs having all the ball and bar the excellent Son, us looking like, well 3 powerhouses in midfield and no creativity! The result was also overshadowed by Dembele and Dier both going off with injuries (although apparently just cramp) but worst of all a very nasty ankle injury to Harry Kane. Nothing has been confirmed yet but the suspected diagnosis is ankle ligament damage for which depending on the severity, can be anything from 4 to 12 weeks recovery time. Fingers crossed for Sir Harry who had finally found his scoring boots!

Man City put in another masterclass with a 4-0 win over Bournemouth. De Bruyne once again was incredible and to think without Silva and Aguero, City still coasted to an emphatic victory should send a stark message to the rest of the league. Everton again show their intentions with an impressive demolition of Middlesbrough and Lukaku again the saviour of my Fantasy team! Crystal Palace put Stoke to the sword as once again Mark Hughes' beleaguered side ship 4 goals. And Leicester are starting to look more like themselves with a very comfortable 3-0 win over Burnley with new record signing Slimani looking instantly at home bagging a brace. Mahrez was also very impressive and looked like maybe any transfer rumours that might have been effecting him are now well in the past.

West Ham continue to struggle in defence and look totally at sea. West Brom fans had been vocal in their request for more attacking football and that's certainly what they got!

I'll finish where I started with Wayne Rooney. I only heard about the below incident this morning, which shows how well it had been covered up by any media outlets! Imagine if this had been Diego Costa!

Man United look indeed pretty bad and I agree with everything you said. In my opinion, at least 3 of those 4 names you listed should be in the starting XI. I remember Jose giving an interview to the BBC during pre-season in which he mentioned that he was surprised by the questions regarding Rooney's position and if he'd remain the captain. Mourinho was very clear about it and I honestly can't see him being dropped to the bench, even though Wayne weakens the entire team.

Carrick or Schneiderlin should be alongside Pogba in the double pivot, but Fellaini is the preferred option based on physical prowess. I can genuinely say that Henrikh Mkhitaryan is one of Europe's best central attacking midfielders and if he's playing on 10 like he was at Shakhtar Donetsk and Borussia Dortmund, the Armenian will deliver goals and provide assists for Zlatan. However, Mkhitaryan is sitting on the bench - no idea why - and even if he does play, you won't get the most out of him if he is utilised on the right wing. Just like Rashford is lethal on 9, but less effective if he has to come from out wide.

Daley Blind has already been punished for his errors in the derby, Luke Shaw was publicly criticised for his mistakes against Watford and Mourinho also started pointing at all the refereeing mistakes; it's the same Mourinho we have come to know. The former "Special One" from his years in Italy always defended his players. They would walk through fire if he asked them, but later on he was confronted with strong personalities Iker Casillas and Sergio Ramos at Real Madrid followed by Cesc Fabregas and John Terry at Chelsea and things went from bad to worse. Luckily, though, Zlatan has come to Manchester for the Portuguese manager, so he will be supportive of Jose no matter what, but it will be interesting to see if and how Mourinho addresses the problems with Leicester, Liverpool and Chelsea over the next four Gameweeks.

On a more positive note, Barcelona continued their fine form at promoted side Leganes with MSN excelling in a 5-1 victory, while Atletico Madrid's 5-0 triumph over Sporting Gijon has got me excited for the big clash between Luis Enrique and Diego Simeone as both title contenders go head to head in midweek. Frank de Boer's Inter had lost 2-0 at home to Israeli side Hapoel Beer Sheeva in the Europa League, but bounced back with a 2-1 win against Juventus! PSG striker Cavani forgot to pull the trigger against Arsenal, but still showed his class as he fired four past Caen in the French league. Feyenoord continued their unbeaten run winning 1-0 away at PSV Eindhoven.

Any news on Kane's ankle injury? Vincent Janssen to the rescue, lol... but can he do it 3 games per week?

There's one thing about Rooney that plays at the back of mind and I wonder if it links to his current situation... And that is going back to the end of the Ferguson era. Fergie more than any other manager perhaps in the entire world at that time was THE man at HIS club. Whatever Fergie wanted he got, whoever he wanted out he got out - no questions asked. However that all changed with Wayne Rooney. At that time Rooney was not performing and Ferguson quite rightly had him in and out of the side. This culminated in Rooney strongly being linked to Chelsea and Ferguson seemingly delighted with the situation. The problem was, Rooney didn't really want to leave and the unthinkable happened: Not only did Rooney end up defying Fergie, but he was awarded with a bumper deal that still boggles the mind today just how he managed to pull off.

It's suggested that this is the time Ferguson knew he was calling it quits, as he acknowledged that the tides had changed. No longer was he the biggest person at the club and once the players could claim any kind of authority over him, then the game was up.

Now, fast forward and we've gone through perhaps the weakest United manager in decades with David Moyes, followed by the man who was supposed to take them back to a Fergie style regime in Van Gaal. The familiar sight though was one thing: Rooney still plays. Sure he may have been shunted around from his main striker position, but the point remains they both still played him despite performances not warranting selection.

Now we come to Mourinho and if Rooney has seen off Ferguson, Moyes and Van Gaal - maybe he has used these times of instability to further increase his own power and influence at the club? The fact that one of the most ruthless managers in the modern game appears to be powerless against him would certainly suggest something bigger than simply reputation.

I forgot to congratulate Gert on his brave Iheanacho captain pick - a very good outcome indeed for you! Ramillas is looking good and very I'm happy to see you collecting a nice haul of points for Kane ;) Just gutted that it will be a long time until he picks up any more :( Ankle ligament damage is now confirmed, but the club will not put a time frame on his expected recovery... which kind of worries me as it sounds like it could be longer than we feared. I have faith in Janssen to step up! I hope he gets a run out tomorrow night in the league cup and can hopefully get his name on the score sheet but mostly to get his sharpness and importantly, minutes into his legs.

Something a little fun before the seriousness of deciding on a captain tomorrow! I recently discovered this almighty forum thread with the outstanding subject of: football mascots observing minutes silences. I fully encourage you take a look through the many, many gems of pure gold. Here are a couple of examples, but you often need to read some of the comments to fully appreciate the hilarity:

There was some sensational stuff in tons of matches with several stunning goals, but Arsenal's dominant display against Chelsea stood out for me and I find Alexis Sanchez the perfect forward. It allows Walcott and Iwobi on either side of a number 10 who was almost poetically described by someone on Twitter saying: "The Ozil that played today is the one who encapsulates the beauty of football. Elegant. Graceful. Imperial". Arsenal always struggled with Chelsea in recent years, making this a lovely evening for Wenger to celebrate 20 years at the club. The Gunners embark on a good run of fixtures, so hopefully they'll be able to continue this winning streak.

Chelsea have the worst centre-back pairing in the league with Cahill and Luiz. What bothers me most - and I have mentioned it last week already - is that this team doesn't have Antonio Conte's signature. If you look back at his time managing Bari, Juventus and Italy's national team, a well-organized defence was his first priority. Now he has to work with defenders that can't defend, aren't quick enough and lack confidence. It's like I'm watching last year's Chelsea all over again with the Blues conceding 9 in 6 matches. They were awful... no, seriously, really awful! Fabregas let his manager down after being handed a starting role, Costa picked up another yellow card and is close to his first ban. It turns out Chelsea's flourishing start to the season with 3 wins in 3 had all to do with weak opposition. I genuinely hope for Conte's sake he can turn it around before Abramovich makes another phone call to Guus Hiddink, lol.

One of the main stories in Sunday's papers will revolve around Wayne Rooney, again. The English international was dropped to the bench and, surprisingly or not, Man United finally put in a decent performance. United's pace up front derailed a what used to be solid Leicester defence and three perfectly executed set pieces left the Foxes exposed at the back. I'm not entirely convinced this is the magic turn around for the Red Devils, but they looked sharp and dangerous throughout the first 45 minutes, though Demarai Gray's spectacular consolation in the second half stole the show. Whether Mourinho will ever admit it or not, the critics - "Einsteins" - were right about one thing; the Rooney era could well be over. Zorya Luhansk and Stoke up next.

Positive week for Tottenham Hotspur! A 5-0 thrashing of Gillingham in the EFL Cup, new contracts for Alli, Rose and Walker, their best start to the season in 51 years and another victory on the road as Middlesbrough suffered from a Sonstroke. The South-Korean man in form netted a brace with his second being an absolutely superb strike in the top corner, quite similar to last week. I'm personally not thrilled yet about Janssen as he seems more preoccupied with running at opponents and setting up others rather than trying to score goals himself. Nevertheless, this terrific result puts Spurs in second place and they have only conceded 3 goals thus far.

Crystal Palace are on a roll as they staged a dramatic fightback from two goals down to beat Sunderland 3-2 in the 94th minute after some terrible defending from David Moyes' side. Stoke and West Brom drew 1-1 in Pulis' 1000th game in management. I'm not a fan of his tactical approach, but what an achievement that is! Oh, and speaking of which, fully deserved three points for Bournemouth and one of my favorite managers Eddie Howe. His football philosophy pleases me and I'd love to see him given a chance at a bigger club in a year or two. Lastly, Man City and Liverpool hammered their opponents, but what's new?

Which manager will get sacked first... Mark Hughes or Francesco Guidolin?

Sam Allardyce... What an idiot! :signhammer:

You wait 10 years for the job you've craved and felt you deserved more than several previous occupiers... and then you throw it all away for 400 grand, a few pints of lager and the chance to show off. Unbelievable! Whilst Allardyce 'officially' did nothing wrong - he didn't actually accept any money nor go through with any of his bold claims - but there can be no sympathy for him being sacked. I still can't believe he was foolish enough to go along with the whole event. Why on earth would he feel the need to offer himself as a go between to circumnavigate his own employers third party ownership rules when he's the freakin' England manager!? An absolute moron.

You wonder where this will leave his career now. I'm sure some desperate club fearing relegation will still be interested in him, but his whole character and reputation is in tatters now so would he still have the same effect on players? I'm not so sure.

So after all that we're back to square one and with another international break coming up in a week or so time, the FA have turned to squeaky clean yes man Gareth Southgate to hold the fort. Urgh, great...

In other news, Spurs finally get their Champions League campaign into winning ways with a very good 1-0 win over CSKA Moscow away in Russia. It was a struggle at times, but on the whole we controlled the game and deserved to take away the three points. To think also that we did it without Rose, Walker, Dier, Dembele and Kane (plus Sissoko) makes the result even more impressive.

Leicester continue their latest fairytale with a second win with a 1-0 win at home to 2 time Champions League winners Porto and leaves them clear at the top of their group with 6 points and already one foot in the knockout stages!

I'm not really looking forward to this coming weekend's game for Spurs v Man City... We should have all but Kane back from the list of missing players v CSKA, but City look on fire and even without the injured Kevin De Bruyne, are a frightening prospect especially after a long arduous trip to Russia.

It makes me kind of torn over captaining Aguero again this week in Fantasy Football! On the one hand I guess seeing Aguero smash home a traditional hat-trick against us softens the blow by giving me points, but on the other hand, I desperately don't want him to score. Decisions, decisions...

I've jumped in with 2 early transfers this week. Kind of regretting the first one already, but I needed to make a defensive change and the problem so far this season is no teams are really keeping clean sheets. When teams like West Brom and Stoke are leaking goals, it's very hard to seek out potential clean sheets. I'm still leaning towards making a 3rd transfer and taking the -8 hit thinking it's for the long term rather than a one week hit. We shall see!

Been feeling under the weather this past week, but holy moly, that undercover investigation from the Daily Telegraph sure has shaken things up in English football with England boss Allardyce, Leeds United owner Massimo Cellino, Barnsley assistent coach Tommy Wright, Southampton assistant Eric Black and QPR manager Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink all linked with alleged corruption or giving advice on how to get around the FA's third party ownership rules. It's the naive and loose-tongued Allardyce's own fault that he lost the dream job he had been wanting for years and I agree that the scandal has dented his reputation, but I wouldn't be surprised if he pops up again at a relegation-threatened club. Anyway, Gareth Southgate in charge for the remaining games in 2016, but then Arsene Wenger, perhaps?

Wednesday turned out to be an exhilarating Champions League evening with a six-goal thriller in Glasgow, Barcelona's comeback in Gladbach and Atletico's superiority at home to Bayern Munich. Furthermore, two goals for Dries Mertens, Edinson Cavani and good ol' Theo Walcott! This round's highlight was the clash between Dortmund and Real Madrid on Tuesday. The Germans were held to a 2-2 draw with Real's goals coming from counter-attacks and Dortmund's squad depth was pivotal as Schurrle, Pulisic and Emre Mor all made an impact when they came off the bench during the second half. I personally fancy them more than Bayern Munich at the moment.

Swansea's Guidolin seems to be headed for the exit as reports have emerged of chairman Huw Jenkins talking with Giggs and former US coach Bob Bradley.

Hugo Lloris' season-high six saves. The unstoppable raids down the flank by two of world's most impressive full-backs Kyle Walker and Danny Rose. One of the best centre-back pairings, Alderweireld and Vertonghen, eliminating the threat that goes by the name of Sergio Aguero. The discipline of all midfielders and lone striker Son to press high on the pitch and to do so for basically 90 minutes long. I could go on and on, but I think we all mainly want to hear Drew's enthusiasm after Tottenham Hotspur's most impressive performance of this 16/17 PL season. :clap

Every pundit that has analyzed teams managed by Guardiola can tell you the best way to beat them is by actually having the guts to put pressure on their own defence. Obviously, not every club has players with the pace and fitness levels required for such risky tactics, but Tottenham do and it was a pleasure to see them going at Claudio Bravo and causing their backline all sorts of problems. I have rarely in the last 10 years seen a Pep side being outclassed as was the case yesterday. Sure, City were without their star Kevin De Bruyne and they had been exhausted from the CL encounter against Celtic, but Tottenham had traveled to Russia and didn't have Harry Kane, so that all balances itself out. Tottenham were by far the better team from start to finish. They bullied City, dominated the game and were absolutely superb! Man City got a taste of their own medicine and this impressive 2-0 victory means Spurs move up to a fully deserved second place!

I was glad to see Antonio Conte finally listened to my advice and revert to a different formation in an attempt to stop conceding so many goals. It meant that Ivanovic, who used to be undroppable, had to watch from the bench with Moses finally making his full Chelsea debut after four years and Marcus Alonso utilised as wing-back on the left. Even in this new set-up, I fear we haven't seen the last of Gary Cahill's poor passing and comical defensive errors, lol. The game could have gone the other way around had Snodgrass' deflected free-kick, which was magically saved by Courtois, gone in to put Hull in the lead. Hazard failed to impress and Fabregas will have to keep himself happy with EFL Cup appearances. Drew, any thoughts on Conte after seven Gameweeks? I know you had doubts about whether his approach, tactics and personality would match with this Chelsea squad.

Burnley are gonna be tough to defeat at Turf Moor. Liverpool couldn't convert 81% possession into goals and now Arsenal's torturingly slow build-up play made it easy for Sean Dyche's men to defend whatever was coming at them. Keeper Heaton only had to make two saves, though, and the lack of an end product on a sunny afternoon in the north-west of England showed that Arsenal's mindset was on getting a nice tan rather than thrashing the opposition. Again deployed as false nine, Alexis Sanchez got two great chances with both efforts going just wide, whilst the controversial winner (handball) from Koscielny was already his second goal of the season. Some good news for Gunner Oxlade-Chamberlain as Southgate recalled the winger to the England senior squad. Good choice?

The World Cup qualifiers are back! England face Malta and Slovenia. Holland are up against Belarus and.... France.

Excellent post Gert - you almost sound more enthusiastic than me haha :D
Image-108107.jpg
You could certainly say I was a little excited yesterday afternoon! To say that result and performance was unexpected is underselling things just a little - quite frankly I feared the worst! Yes City were without De Bruyne and we shouldn't forget Nolito's absence as he has also been a big performer for City so far this season and we cannot discount the difference those two may have made. As Gert pointed out, we also were without Harry Kane, but perhaps more significantly we also had no Mousa Dembele who has proved over the past 18 months that he is an even bigger key player to our results.

There was an almost off hand comment made by Gary Neville after about 20 minutes of the game had passed. He said that with the pace and energy Spurs had started the game, there is no way they could keep it up for 90 minutes and that he thought we would be made to pay for it later in the game. This would be true for most teams, but as we saw countless times last season, the fitness levels of this Spurs team are insane. Yes, after 25 minutes we 'took a breather' and it did appear as though City were going to get themselves into a domination spell of their own. Looking back however, you could tell that whilst Tottenham did lower their levels, it was all very controlled. Think of it like a workout - you have spells of high intensity and then controlled spells of lower intensity. This is how the game felt for me. 25 minutes of pure exhilaration where City quite frankly did not know what hit them and completely rattled their own game. Then 15 minutes of controlled play to allow enough recovery to finish the half strong.

This sort of fitness and energy is exactly what was required to punishingly & continuously press the ever increasingly nervous Bravo in City's goal. I almost felt sorry for the guy! He knows he's been brought in to replace the homegrown hero because as Pep so publicly said could not distribute the ball well enough. It's made him in an almost impossible situation where he feels unable to boot the ball away from danger. As Gert said, against a majority of teams this won't be too much of a problem, but Spurs are something else in this department. Never have I shouted at my tv screen "press the keeper, press the keeper" so many times lol and even better, on my command watched Son dutifully carry out my instructions each and every time :D

I also want to make a point of Pochettino's instructions (it wasn't all me shouting for Son to press the keeper, I admit). This pass-porn chart was shown last night and I think it highlights a few very important points:
Image-841269.jpg

As we can see, there was virtually no passing (at most two) between the centre backs and instead the ball was continuously distributed towards Rose or Walker. This faster movement of the ball to wider areas meant we kept the ball in dangerous areas and did not allow City to press our own centre backs or the centre of the pitch, which is where they were mostly stacked up. It also meant less pressure on Wanyama who was absolutely outstanding. Also noteworthy is the large number of passes from Walker to Sissoko down the right hand side which resulted in Sissoko having by a distance his best game since joining. Finally the number of times Eriksen played Son into dangerous areas.

One thing I will say about the City lineup is that it felt very much like a City lineup of last season. If this was a Pellegrini performance, I would totally believe it. Of course they had the two missing players as mentioned, but with Fernando and Fernandinho, this felt very unlike a Pep team.

I don't expect Spurs to give performances like this every game and quite frankly, I still expect us to come crashing down to earth in a fortnight's time v West Brom (I'm actually going to that game!). But with United putting in another lacklustre performance against Stoke and Chelsea also a bit hit and miss, there has to be an opportunity for at least a top 4 place if we can keep things going.

Right enough on Spurs ;)

To answer your question about Conte, I've been impressed by him personally but very surprised that he hasn't stamped his mark onto the team. I thought it was guaranteed he would instantly adopt his three centre backs system so to see him to have used a more traditional system raised eyebrows. I think it will also be interesting to see how he handles any potential player 'slacking' in stars such as Eden Hazard who already this season has had almost anonymous games and looked prone to sulking. Similarly, with David Luiz being a high profile expensive signing, we await to see how Conte tries to calm him down lest he sees the inevitable calamities.

As for Gareth Southgate's first England squad... It's kind of depressing and looks very unbalanced. He's only named Dier and Henderson as central midfielders and 4 strikers, which leads me to believe Southgate is buying into this charade that Rooney can play in centre mid. We've then got one attacking midfielder in Alli, with the squad bulked out with every English winger currently in the professional game. Or at least it seems that way! Oxlaide-Chamberlain, Walcott, Antonio, Lingard and Sterling. Do we really need 5 similar players for at most 2 positions who all offer pretty much the same thing? He's gone similarly cautious in defence with no less than 4 central defenders and 4 full backs including the return of Glen Johnson. Surely he could have gone with 3 defenders or at worst picked someone a bit more versatile? Heck, even Antonio has played at right back for West Ham so why not use him as cover for any Walker injury?

I've gone on far too long as usual lol. But two bits of breaking news today: Firstly Aston Villa have fired Roberto Di Matteo as coach just 124 days after appointing him after their relegation to the Championship. Not a massive surprise really as he was never going to be the type of manager required to get Villa out of the egregious mess they are in. And secondly, Swansea have fired Guidolin and replaced him already with former USA coach Bob Bradley. Again, not a surprise that Guidolin has gone as Swansea's start to the season has been woeful and I always got the impression he was seen as a temporary solution to get them through last season. But the appointment of Bradley just makes me shake my head in amazement. When will clubs learn!? I'm sure Bradley is a great coach and under the right circumstances could do a great job. But Swansea are already in a precarious position - we've seen so many times that when a club struggles to get results it's often more than just a managerial change required. And if you're battling relegation, even at this early stage of the season, you need someone to come in with experience of managing such a situation. Not someone coming into English football for the first time and being given a huge task.

Maybe they wanted Ryan Giggs, but seeing as he's rumoured to be amongst those under investigation by the Telegraph, maybe Swansea made a smart decision to steer clear!

I had a bit of a shocking week - 4 midfielders getting me a massive 6 points between them lol. Still, I think last week was quite low scoring for most people so getting scores in the mid 50's really closed some gaps. My best laid plans of getting in a Liverpool midfielder even at a cost of -4 points and a loss of 300k from dithering an extra day failed spectacularly when Lallana went off injured early in their game. Now it's a tricky question of do I keep him even though he's unlikely to play v United, switch him for another Liverpool player even though they are playing United or look to make a change elsewhere... Hmm, I'll try to wait until after the international games are over just in case there are any fresh injuries.

Damn this game and it's addictiveness lol!

A recap of the international break...

On Thursday southern nations Spain and Italy faced each other with both having well-known styles. The former likes dominating possession, while the latter prefers to react and counter-attack. Spain were excellent as always and went 1-0 up when keeper Buffon missed a through ball in the heart of defence which allowed forward Vitolo to score Spain's opening goal. Italy did come back to draw 1-1 courtesy of a De Rossi penalty, but Pelle was the one making headlines as he refused to shake manager Ventura's hand after getting subbed off. It was a form of disrespect that forced the Italian FA to send the Shandong Luneng striker home to China. Julen Lopetegui's men may have lost two points, Spain are still clear favorites to win group G.

Maarten Stekelenburg's return between the posts in Holland's big victory over Belarus on Friday marks his return in the starting XI since 4 years. The Everton keeper has got more experience than Cillessen and Zoet, but our centre-half Jeffrey Bruma allowed Belarus to enter the penalty area and get a goal back. Overall, very happy with our performance in midfield and up front. Spartak Moscow's Quincy Promes finally scored twice before Vincent Janssen's wonderful strike in the top corner sealed the deal and he has now scored 4 goals in 8 starts for Holland. You could tell he was on a mission to score as he has kinda lost that feeling in London. I personally would've liked Bas Dost to start - he is on fire playing for Sporting Lisbon - but I can't be unhappy with Janssen's performance.

England are champions of qualifying as they remain unbeaten since 2009, although The Three Lions simply don't have the quality to really destroy defensive opponents. The already tiresome Rooney debate continued on Saturday as the captain was deployed in a deep-lying midfield role. Furthermore, Rose is a better full-back than Bertrand, Lingard got his starting role thanks to having played under Southgate in the U21s and Theo Walcott's form is undeniable, but Malta always play with five at the back, meaning there was literally no space behind the Maltese defence for Walcott to do what he does best. I thought Henderson was the man of the match, lol... putting in a lot of crosses of which one was beautifully converted by Sturridge. Henderson's efforts later led to an Alli goal, but it's tough playing countries like Malta, who only come to Wembley to try and concede as few goals as possible, and you could just tell the second half wouldn't offer anything significant as a lack of tempo made things easy for Pietro Ghedin's side.

Dusan Tadic was instrumental for Serbia in Sunday night's win against Austria and has in fact been pivotal this entire campaign as the Serb has been involved in all of their 8 goals! Striker Mitrovic put them in the lead twice, courtesy of two Tadic assists, but Austria found their way back into the match time after time until the Southampton creator himself notched the winner in the 74th minute to lift Serbia into first place of group D. Elsewhere on Sunday, Italy avoided an embarassing defeat in Macedonia with Ciro Immobile scoring in stoppage time, whilst Spain won comfortably in Albania with goals from Costa and Nolito. Chris Coleman's Wales failed to keep Georgia at bay drawing 1-1.

Monday saw France and Holland meet in Amsterdam. The numbers 8 and 24 of the FIFA ranking didn't provide much entertainment as the Euro 2016 finalists only came to collect a draw and therefore refused to waste any energy. Paul Pogba's long-range effort, which should've been saved by Stekelenburg, proved to be the extra bit of quality that we lack. I was also impressed by Sissoko's movement, Payet's touches on the ball, the link up play between Griezmann and Gameiro; it's all world champion worthy in my opinion. Holland look like a decent team, but we should be targeting second place in our group and try qualifying via the play-off. Hopefully if Robben ever gets fit again, he can make the difference for us. Both Belgium and Portugal demonstrated what to do with minnows Gibraltar and Faroe Islands in their 6-0 routs.

The last batch of qualifiers went down last night. Germany's training session against Northern Ireland started off with some brilliant attacking play in the first half and goals from Draxler and Khedira. The following 60 minutes were just as much fun as watching paint dry. The dominance Germany display is so overwhelming at times that opponents automatically think defensively and park the bus. I particularly want to mention Boateng and Hummels, both of whom continuously sent long crosses to Gotze and Muller. All these kind of matches are of no real interest to most fans as the big countries generally ease through their respective groups with the Germans now topping group C ahead of Azerbaijan. Alright, let's get back to domestic football!

A little reminder of what Gameweek 8 can be like:
2014/2015: Man City 4-1 Tottenham (Aguero 4 goals)
2015/2016: Man City 6-1 Newcastle (Aguero 5 goals)
2016/2017: Man City vs Everton

Oh, and there is Monday night football with Liverpool vs Man United!

As much as I'd like to forget the recent international fortnight, let me sum up England's performance against Malta with a quote from someone on Twitter regarding Jordan Henderson's man of the match award: "Getting man of the match in a 2-0 win versus Malta... I wouldn't accept it". With all due respect to Malta, winning 2-0 in a particularly dull and stagnant game was pretty poor even by England's standards. Wayne Rooney gave the ball away an astonishing 25 times playing his deeper play making role. To put that into perspective, Mousa Dembele gave the ball away less in the entirety of last season! Considering Rooney was often operating in around 30 yards of completely free space due to Malta's lack of any kind of desire to press the ball, it summed up a shocking performance.

Then Southgate decided to change things up and utilise the 4 Tottenham players in his squad, however once again the England manager fails to see the bigger picture when trying to copy the Spurs game. It was never ever going to work with Walcott and Lingard in the team - both players who hug the touchline and offer very little in creativity. It meant that the key component of Pochettino's Tottenham of Walker and Rose bombing forward to create width was completely pointless as both the two forward players were already out there and simply got in the way.

Add to that Cahill looking absolutely clueless in trying to cover the full back positions as Vertonghen and Alderweireld do so effortlessly for Spurs and you've got a very mis-matched formation. With the goaless result that came a great indicator of a manager not knowing his players, nor how to adapt to those he does have.

Anyway, thank goodness it's over for another few months!

Is that a strong hint you are captaining Aguero this week Gert! ;) I think this is the first week I haven't automatically gone with Aguero as captain (not counting last week as it's the law you can't captain him versus your own team lol) and currently sit with Sanchez wearing the armband. Everton should be a tough fixture for City but you certainly cannot rule out City putting on a performance to make up for losing their unbeaten streak. It's a very tough decision this week!

Just the one transfer for me this week and one I didn't really want to make and to be honest, am still not sure I've made the correct decision... Time will tell I guess!

What are your predictions for Liverpool v Man United Gert? I've thought for the past couple of weeks that I could easily see Liverpool deal out a stunning result, especially if they have one of those 20 minute spells where they destroy teams and knock in 3-4 quick goals. But will Jose - master of parking the bus - be happy just to nullify Liverpool's attacking strength and look to steal something against their more fragile defence? I'm torn quite frankly! It could be 3-0 to Liverpool or could end up 0-0...

I was supposed to be going to see the West Brom v Spurs game, but missed out on tickets. I guess that's a sign of playing well that it's harder to pick up tickets and fans who otherwise would prefer not to make the trip are much more willing.

Two bits of managerial news: Steve Bruce is the new Aston Villa manager - finally a sensible managerial appointment! You know what that means... The end is nigh, run away, the end is nigh! On the subject of Steve Bruce have you seen his dramatic weight loss since resigning from Hull? All credit to him, although if ever there was an advert for staying away from football management, I think that was it!

The other managerial appointment is that of Steve McClaren rejoining Derby County, much to the surprise of everyone. Apparently the owners told him if he were to apologise for how he left them (when he basically took his eyes completely off Derby whilst so close to promotion in order to flirt with the Newcastle job) then the job was his again. So I guess he must have apologised! I thought Derby fans would be rather upset at this news, but being from Derbyshire I know a few fans and they all are absolutely delighted!

Sometimes I wonder how it would be if all PL managers had Guardiola's philosophy and every club the resources to attract that type of top level players. The City boss opted to rest Aguero ahead of a clash with Barcelona and start with three defenders. Former teammates Guardiola and Koeman know each other through and through and I thought Man City were formidable again, despite losing two points in the title race. They created enough great chances, even got two penalties, but it was due to Everton's outstanding defensive performance that City are now without a win in their last three. Koeman was spot on post-match saying not many teams will leave the Etihad with a result and that Stekelenburg had played the best game of his career. For real, he was back to his best, like I remember him from the World Cup 2010. Man City missing from the spot twice is reason for concern, though. It was Aguero's 5th (!) time this season.

Bournemouth's efforts are finally paying off with a well-deserved monstrous victory against a woeful Hull City. It really is joyful watching a relatively small club spoil fans with such lovely creative football. The Cherries have improved their home form and the future could look even brighter if they can stop conceding goals from personal errors, though Steve Cook was quickly forgiven after his powerful header put them back in the lead. What impresses me is that even the full-backs Daniels and Smith are at times going forward as if they're playing for Spurs, lol. Speaking of which, I think Tottenham could struggle next week as the BOU v TOT fixture is right in between Bayer Leverkusen (CL) and Liverpool (EFL Cup) which makes the trip to the Vitality Stadium one that could easily be underestimated.

The top 4 in La Liga ran riot with Barca giving a 4-0 masterclass against Deportivo, Atletico Madrid went absolutely mental thrashing Granada 7-1, Real Madrid gave Real Betis six punches in the face and Villarreal beat Celta Vigo 5-0 on Sunday night. Meanwhile in Italy, pressure is mounting on Frank De Boer as Inter lost at home to Cagliari and if Southampton can win the Europa League tie in Milan, then De Boer could well be on the brink of getting sacked. They've slipped to 11th in the table...

My thoughts on Liverpool vs Man United? I think Liverpool have got momentum and home advantage, so I kinda expect them to produce a hurricane Matthew of their own by pressing high on the pitch and try to force United in making mistakes. A lot of people say Mourinho will park the bus, but this United don't have the defensive mentality to execute a plan like that as Blind/Shaw and Valencia love going forward. Besides, Mourinho is well aware of the historical rivalry and importance of this match and they need to come up with a performance. The world is watching and it will be one hell of a night.

Drew, why is England international Heaton still playing for Burnley? I've been really impressed with him all season and he could totally play at a bigger club.

Any tips on who to bring in this week Rokkerr! Diego Costa is starting to look like the essential striker to have right now and those who captained him this week did very well from him. My only hesitation is that I believe he's one yellow card away from a suspension, which surely can't be too far away, so I'll try to leave him until that is no longer an issue...

No questioning the player who pulled Gert and I's arse out of the fire this week though lol! Step forward Jose Holebas and his cracking top corner strike to add onto a precious clean sheet and 3 bonus points in earning Watford a 1-0 win for a priceless total of 15 points.

Well 'Red Monday' as Sky TV had relentlessly billed last night's game, hyping it up as two teams battling out game of the century... turned out to be a damp squib. Mourinho chose to park the bus and do his best Tony Pulis impression and despite Man United having their lowest possession percentage of any game in the Premier League ever at a miserly 38%, managed to mostly nullify Liverpool's much more eager attack. That David De Gea was unquestionably man of the match pretty much says it all. And United's overall performance and attitude can be summed up with this great stat:

What is starting to strike me about Mourinho is how out of date he's starting to feel. His midweek moaning about how 'local' referee Anthony Taylor would find it tough to officiate the match due to where he lives stinks of the sort of desperate mind games that perhaps worked 5-10 years ago but now everyone just looks at with disdain. Then his tactics of using £350million of talent to emulate West Brom last night in what should have been a match considered unmissable viewing, but instead caused viewers to turn off in boredom. Compared to leading managers right now such as Guardiola, Pochettino, Klopp, Wenger - I don't believe that any one of them would have gone into that game last night and not done so with a gameplan of trying to win the game. Even teams like Everton, West Ham or Southampton I believe would have gone into the game with more ambition.

I won't go over the other Premier League games as Gert has already covered them, but just to say I totally agree that the Bouremouth game for Spurs will be very tough and is not a game I'm looking forward to. As you say, the timing is not the best and they are really showing some great form right now. Spurs have 7 games in the next 23 days, which is ridiculous on many levels so I think we can expect to see lots of rotation over the next few weeks. I kinda hope we don't put too much effort into the Liverpool cup game. I'll say right now that we should swallow our pride, put out a bunch of kids and reserves and let Liverpool have the extra game to play. Considering that even if we put out our strongest side, there's no guarantee we would win and it would probably make the game even more intense, I think that is one game we just have to say it's not worth it.

I'm not really sure why Heaton is still at Burnley! Although it's probably because he's English and clubs will see him not making England squads despite the alternatives being picked ahead of him and use that as their judgement. He's looking like turning into a really impressive keeper though and I'm sure that if he continues to impress it won't be long before one of the bigger teams make a move.

Champions League week! :cheerleader:
