I have eating pigeon on several occasions Henna - as a starter in a sort of terrine style and also breast meat. Its OK, but needs to be cooked properly.
Bunny tastes better!!

Woodpecker is intriguing - I suspect it may have a nutty flavour, or possibly pine tinged. Probably need to use it as a starter I would think. Deep fried in batter with some spicy dips maybe............

Now that is what you would call a woodpecker. They only peck on wood! :lmao: And no PeterL they definitely are not good to eat---no meat! lol Good pics. Vicky!

Oh it drove me nuts, I like to sleep in and that was not an option with Mr. Kookaburra around.

Thankfully I don't have any nuisances like that around in New Hampshire. For those of you that don't follow me on social media, I just got a 300mm lens for my DSLR so I've been shooting some birds as well.

I captured this image of a Great Blue Heron hunting fish in the pond across the street the other day.

Now herons are a nuisance - if you have carp in a pond you can say goodbye to them if a heron comes by.
Not sure I fancy trying heron - but you know what they say - it all tastes like chicken!

You must be starved PeterL if you think these birds would taste good! lol You probably don't have herons where you live anyway! Now if you want to eat a good game bird you should try pheasant.

We do occasionally have herons and certainly woodpeckers (both spotted and green).
The taste is why I'm making cooking suggestions - jus got a Caribbean cookery book - so Jerk heron it is!!

Do you have pheasants in England PeterL? The breast is the best and we cut it in strips, roll them in a beer batter and deep fat fry. Ummmm delicious!

We do have pheasants here - they are shot for sport - first time I had it it came with the warning "Watch out for your teeth, there is probably still some shot in it!"
We also have peasants - and I'm one of them.
Other game birds include Grouse. Not sure what to make of the idea of "hanging" them though - keeping them until they start to go green and then apparently they are fit to eat!

I'll try most things once - the worst fowl (or in this case foul) I have eaten was Emu as a starter in an Australian themed restaurant. It was served cold and was really fatty and greasy - hated it!
The kangaroo steak was delicious though - highly recommend that!

We have Blue Herons here too, so many birds around here all nesting. I'm going to a place called Fort Chip, it's in Wood Buffalo National Park. I'm hoping to see a Whooping Crane and a Trumpeter Swan, you can't get close to the nesting site but with lots of luck we'll see some.

That's the perfect description of a mag-pie Mike, their so annoying and then throw in some ravens, it's almost enough to piss of the pope!

We are lucky that a naturalist set up a camera in an eagles nest. We get to watch the pair nest, hatch and raise their babies. It is in real time and we can log in at any time. I haven't watched it for a couple of years but it was neat to see.

Now ostrich is lovely - medallions of ostrich cooked in your favourite sauce - salivating already. Nice lean meat that is somewhere between white and dark. All for it!!
