The other thing - which in the panic of the moment is almost impossible - is to try to cough, or force air OUT of your lungs (what the fall onto the ground actually does. You are trying to push the bit of food or whatever outwards - if you are trying to gasp IN really hard all you are doing is pushing the obstruction tighter in. Easy to type about but if you can exhale rather than inhale you may well clear the obstruction!
