Well, it ruins it for dogs who are actually trained to preform a task. I'm all for service animals. I know someone with extreme PTSD and her actually trained and certified dog is amazing. My father used to help train service labs. It's an interesting process. They pick dogs based on temperament. Actually, the dog I have has been trained in the service dog manner. My dad and I worked with him. He just has a great temperament. He isn't certified. But there is a marked different between pet behavior and service dog behavior.
As someone who knows the difference, it ruffles me. Don't abuse the system. It ruins it for people who actually need service animals.

That's true, Samantha. It doesn't seem to be very well regulated at all. I've read that you can even get a "certification" on line. Just write some on-line "Dr.," tell him "I"m upset and I need my dog." The guy will send an official looking paper, and the person goes and gets a paper that says "Service Animal" and hangs it on their dog. Then they take them to restaurants or wherever. I do think that airlines take precautions to ensure that pets are valid service animals. But, restaurants and other public places don't have those protections.
As you know, there's always some slug that sees no problem with gaming the system. We call them "Cheats."

Southwest sure laid down the law, it can only be dogs and cats, no other animals now.

Well, safe travels, Rokk. We hear so many stories, just be ready for whatever happens. I think that most instances of animals on board to pretty well, so, just take care of your mom and have a great trip.
