I feel very lucky to have quit smoking back in about 1985. I found it easy, but it took several months. I switched to the lowest tar/nicotine cigarette I could find. At first they weren't enough. I would have to smoke two in a row to satisfy that urge. But it calmed down after a couple days. Then I was back to my pack-a-day habit. But now I was smoking cigs (Vantage) that had only 10% of the tar/nicotine that unfiltered Pall Mall had.

I smoked those for several months. My thinking was that, I was still satisfying my habit, while at the same time, my body could clean out the buildup of tar in my lungs. Apparently that is what happened. "Light" cigarettes are NOT "safer than regular cigarettes. They provide lower amounts of tar and nicotine. But there are still a butt-load of dangerous chemicals in them. If you do smoke, you do need to stop. Seriously, think about it, talk to your doctor, then get busy. People will tell you the cigarettes are not safe. And they are right. But if this will help you stop, do it.

My doctor had commented about smoking on a previous visit. On my next visit, he commented again. I had read an article in Readers Digest about Nicorette gum. It was prescription back then and was $20/box for 96 pieces of gum. He didn't even question, he just wrote me a prescription.

I carried the gum with me to work, but carried my ciggies. One day, I felt confident. I left the cigs home and I left the gum home. If you smoke, you know the fear of needing a cigarette and not having one. And don't tell me you've never dug thru an ash tray to find a butt with enough left for a few more puffs, lol.

I don't remember, after a week or two, I stopped carrying the cigs. The gum was working. I have known people who had to have a cigarette the very first thing. I remember a roommate in the military. As soon as his feet hit the floor, the first thing he did was light a cigarette. Me? I had to have breakfast first before I had a cig. But, one morning, I just knew. I It was weird. I just felt that I was done. I didn't take my cigs to work and I didn't take the gum. I was done. The RD article had said that it typically took 5 or 6 boxes to lose the habit. But I was done after about 1/2 a box.

NO cigarette is safe. The lower tars (the black tarry substance that coats your lungs,) and nicotine (the addictive part) are helpful, but all the other chemicals are still there. I have no doubt that smoking the low tar cigs. allowed my system to clean out. Then, once I started the gum, it only took 2-3 weeks(?)

I've provided this link to an article. If you're really interested and want to stop, this is a good place to start. One thing they say is that, in order to stop, you have to WANT to. And I tend to believe that. I know I wanted to, and I think it was that thought that made this successful. If you go for it? Good Luck. Just remember, after 4-6 months, it's time to start the gum or the patch or which ever you want.

If you choose the gum, remember, you don't chew it like Juicy Fruit. The taste will overwhelm you and you might stop. When you chew the gum, you chew a few bites, then you 'park' it in the side of your jaw. When you feel the urge again, make a few more chews. Park it again. In a bit, the gum will be used up, and you throw it away.
