‘The Beaver’ Magazine Changes Name Due To Porn Mix-Up

The Beaver is the second oldest magazine in Canada. Now, after a 90-year run, changing its name because the title is too often censored by online porn filters, preventing it from reaching new online readers. Skip

The publication was originally launched in Winnipeg in 1920 to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Hudson’s Bay Company and the fur trade that led to the early exploration of Canada.

However as the word later became a synonym for vagina, the magazine began to experience troubles. “The Beaver was an impediment online,” publisher Deborah Morrison told AFP.

“Several readers asked us to change the title because their spam filters at home or at work were blocking it,” she said. “I’ve even had emails bounce back because I had inadvertently typed the term in the heading.”

The Beaver will publish its last issue under its present name in February/March. Thereafter, the magazine know for documenting Canada’s history will be known as Canada’s History.
