The moment of truth is upon us ,the 5th and final test starts tomorrow,England must win to get the Ashes,a draw Australia keep them.
Not only is the result vital but it's Freddie Flintoffs last test match and he will want to finish with a win.

I can't believe that there is NOTHING on USA Sportscenter about this AND you have to pay for the right to even watch the ASHES.... the USA has a ton of Brits that live here... at least a mention would be cool. Thanks Vec!

Hey Dave ..I've got to confess to a senior moment..i don't know why I thought the test started tomorrow ,when it was today.
To catch up England were 307-8 at the close of play.Reports say that after a good start they should have done better, but Trott the newcomer(a replacement for KP) is still there so with a bit of support tomorrow we might improve.

The Aussies are slightly ahead after day one but there's a long way to go yet. If your bowlers break through early on day two and get our batsmen under pressure then England have a chance of winning the game and the Ashes. We'll see what transpires.

You were so right Steve, our bowters didn't just achieve a breakthrough but a miracle.
With Australia on 66-0 at lunch they looked fairly comfortable, but an awesome spell from Stuart Broad reduced them to 131-8.
The afternoon session saw a score line of 72-8,pure magicif you were English, finally all out for 160.
However we haven't started our 2nd innings too well being 58-3 at the close, giving a lead of 230,if we can scrape another 150 off this wicket the Ashes should be ours.

We did even better than we hoped, finally declaring at 393-8 leaving Australia to get 546 to win. This isn't probable, the record score to win on the 4th innings is 418,so the next thing is can the Aussies bat for two days to get the draw and keep the Ashes or can we get the 10 wickets to win .The smart money is on us,just don't let it rain for the next two days.

Yeah Vectis, not looking good for us right now; 546 in the 4th innings looks beyond the Aussies. Ugh, guess I'll be praying for for the usual English summer weather to reemerge (no :sun: lots of rain).

YES YES YES The Ashes come home,Aussies all out for 348,we win by 197 runs in 4 days.
The turning point being the Aussie 1st innings of just 160,,the 3 other innings all got past the 300 mark.
The 9 over spell from Broad with 5-35 ,taking 5 of the top7 batsmen made the difference. Swann made a huge contirution with 4 wickets in each innings and a sparkling 63 in Englands 2nd ,but Broad was the matchwinner and kept it in the family, his father was a member of the Ashes winning side in Aus1986/87.
Now for the One Day Internationals and the 20/20's

Congratulations to the English cricket team on regaining the Ashes. The Aussies were outplayed in the Fifth Test and did not play well enough throughout the series. I predicted a 2-1 result either way at the start so until the next series Down Under ...

Vectis and Rokkerr, you can :drinker: all you want guys!

Thanks Steve, but the 3 day thrashing in the 4th test was not our brightest hour.
A thrilling finish to a pretty even series, but you're 4th and we're 5th in the world rankings ,South Africa this winter could be more demanding.

Hey Walt..The scoring method in cricket is adding up the number of runs.
A run is scored when the batsman hits the ball past the fielders and "runs" to the other end of the wicket .There are two batsmen on the field at all times at each end of the wicket(one on strike..facing the bowling )they are both required to run,and one run is added to the score, often they can run 2 or 3 times before the fielder can return the ball to the wicket, and those runs are added to the score.
If the batsman hits the ball over the boundary he is credited with 4 runs,if it clears the boundary without touching the ground he gets 6.
Where I've posted a number.e.g Aust 384 that is the number of runs they have scored, the side with the highest total wins.

Very interesting, Vectis. Thanks for that. That sounds like it might equate (in baseball) to the number of bases on a hit. For example, if a batter hit a double, he would get 2 runs, 3 for a triple and 4 for a home run.

One of these days I'll look up a site that explains the game so I can follow closer.

Not the Ashes this year ,so not quite the same intensity for the test matches .
But we are playing India who are currently ranked no1 in world cricket and a win in the series will take England to the top spot so they are important games.
On a day ,affected by rain,England are 127 -2 and frankly have been lucky , batting not to impressive but couple of misfields have helped us ,we need to improve tomorrow.
