"What's the program" is a common question. I had the same question back in 2004. I had no idea what to expect, but I had just read True Beginings and had a much better idea --and better appreication -- of Pete's role back then.

Suggest to thse intereted to find the 10 Anthology tracks that PB plays on, plus others tracks from Anthology that the band played on stage those days, including You've Really Got a Hold on Me, I Saw her standing there, Kansas City, etc. You can give a set list also, but that might take the real surprise and fun out of it, right? The beauty of a PBB concert is that not many USA fans know there was a very succesful stage act in the early days; PBB projects that with ultimate authenticity into the audience..rought through the audience.

The Meet & Greet is a unigue surprise for many folks who were not expecting the chance to actually meet the bandmembers, including Pete, after the show. It's fun to watch newbies smiling ear to ear as they go from "what's this show about ?" to "holy cripes this is amazing!", and other exclamations. In short, fun all around. What to expect? Lennon is quoted and GH is quoted on the liner notes of the Polydor CD re-issue saying virtually the same thing, that the peak as stage performers was in hamburg, where facts and history reflect that PB was the guy driving the beat the majority of that time.

Here's also another link for you for some Stu info. http://classicrock.about.com/od/artistp ... cliffe.htm You'll see the musical contribution may have been rather minimal,, but I wasn't there so it's not my place to say. It appears that the legacy was more along freindships, fashion, and the origination of the band's eventual name.

Oh well, The Apple Corps excutive vice president, Neil Aspinall just passed away recently - about a month ago. I just heard. He was a very good friend of Paul and George. And he drove the van on the early Beatle gigs....

It was so good to see George in the Madison Square Garden video clips for the Bob Dylan tribute in 1992. Please check out the Benny's Booth post. Thanks Benny for putting the links up.

Thanks John. I still get all sentimental watching George in that MSG clip. He still does that little toe step that I remember from the "A Hard Day's Night" stage show at the end of the movie.
He wasn't the fastest or best guitarist around but when the four of them got together it was pure magic.

Yes Indeed -

Again, if you like the early music, then do go to one of Best's concerts as it is an enjoyable event. 5th Beetle discussion aside.

Arrrrggggh.. all this ranting and trying to get a point across.. Yikes!! :D

... that's like saying Terry Reid is in Led Zeppelin.... Arrrrrrgggh.

Hey Rokkerr - why not create a sub-forum and move all the "Pete Best" references to there? Torp can author it. This is getting a little disconcerting in here since apparently Torp... crazy guy that he is, and I do like him so :D .... has a big infatuation with Mr. Best.

Pure Beatles... John, Paul, George and Ringo...ONLY!! Enough said.

Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones asked Terry Reid to be the lead singer in Led Zeppelin. However, Terry was too busy writing songs as well as performing his own singing as a solo artist and as a studio musician at the time. He turned them down and recommended a singer out of the Birmingham club ciruit.. His name was Robert Plant. Plant, in turn, knew of a drummer John Bonham. And that's how that group got started.

I agree, with that, John. Stu and Pete seem to be good musicians in their own right, but The Beatles are The Beatles. Kind of like The Rolling Stones, down to 3 original members (altho the replacements have always been great.) I like the Doo-Wop reunion shows on PBS. But, when does a group stop being the group, when it's a 5-member group and only one guy is left from the original. Just because you can sing the songs, does that make you the original group or just a cover band?

Went to see the Beach Boys a few years ago. But it was Brian Wilson, Mike Love and 3 other guys, including Bruce Johnston who, altho not an 'original' Beach Boy, has been with them for many years (since 1965.) Oh, they sounded great, but it was only 2/5th of the group. Am I an uncaring, insensitive boob? Yes. :noway! :walt:

My favorite? Hmmmmm tough one. I will think about it and place it here
For me that's an impossible question to answer but of the early Beatle's stuff I'd have to say 'Til There Was You but ironically the Beatles didn't write it. The trivia is it was written by Meredith Willson in 1957 for a Broadway musical.

Greetings Batracer! Glad to see another music aficionado on the board here!

Till There Was You was indeed from the 1957 Broadway musical "The Music Man". When the Beatles performed before the Queen at the Royal Command Performance in 1963, Paul introduced that song and credited it to their "Favorite American group, Sophie Tucker."

Here's a clip of that actual performance.

:fighting: there John as I thought this was a discussion of the beatles and perhaps you need to start with the Anthology Collection as that has the true beginnings. Anthology was also very important because one of those ten tracks featuring Best was the "Purdy" overdubs, the sound of which no doubt inspired the need for today's 2 drummer line-up.

nor do I have an infatuation with pete best, but at least I can say I have attended his shows and they are very good - Can you say that?. Your choice of pistols, swords or water guns but I am an expert in pistols can hold my own with an epee so I would strongly suggest water guns :D

and walt we are not talking about the 357th bluesbreakers or how many of the Four Tops and Do Woopers from the original group are actually there and in some cases none. Rather we are speaking about someone who was an original performer (go buy the Anthology then come back and comment) whose peformance and involvement would eventually take the silver beatles to the Beatles that we became aware of...

Also BTW, when Paul changed his name to Paul Ramon it was the direct inspiration for another famous (infamous?) bass player named Dee Dee, who adopted the Ramones surname for himself, and labelled his own band "The Ramones."

No :fighting: here, Torp ...Heeehee!! Your perspective was just a little different than most.

Boy, did you let me have it quite subtly -- :violent-smiley: with both barrels!! -- which is quite deserved most times. Haahaaa!!

It belongs here, since Peter and Stuart were part of the Beatles at some point. Though it shouldn't be .... (yes, those damn voices are going at it again in my head.... Heehee!! :D )

... Anyway, water pistols at twenty-five paces in the Manassas, VA battlefield at 6 AM on Tuesday, April 22 sounds good. I'll meet ya there. You take care in the meantime.

An evening with a founding member of the Beatles: Priceless, absolutely priceless!!

The venue will change on the spring tour but the theme won't and there is always a meet and greet after the show;

Re-live the days of 1960-62 in The Casbah Club, The Cavern, and the clubs of Hamburg, Germany with the man who put the beat in The Beatles: Pete Best and The Pete Best Band. You'll enjoy both fantastic rock-n-roll classic, and fun, firsthand stories about John, Paul, George and Stu, from the man who was there behind them on the drumkit for more than 1,000 shows with The Beatles. Opening the show will be Buffalo's local favorite Beatlemagic, brilliantly recreating the unforgettable sights and sounds of 1964-1970.

Before "Sgt. Pepper"...before the "mania"...they were The Savage Young Beatles!! The Pete Best Band will thrill you with the early rockers that helped launch The Beatles to superstardom. You'll be twisting and shouting out loud with Some Other Guy, Ain't She Sweet, You Really Got a Hold On Me, Hello Little Girl, Please Mr Postman, etc, plus the classic "My Bonnie", the firecracker of a song that lit the initial spark of Beatlemania in 1961. Cry for A Shadow is featured on Beatles Antholgy 1 and is notable as the only Lennon-Harrison composition ever recorded.

A fun surprise at a Pest Best Band event is the post-show "Meet and Greet" where fans can get autographs and photos. The The Fab Five (from Liverpool NY, yes..NY) closes out the evening with hits from The British Invasion and deep Beatle cuts, "...(one of) the best tribute bands in the country" according to CBS Sunday Morning.

"We were at our best when we were playing in the dance halls of Liverpool and Hamburg (with Pete Best on drums). The world never saw that. " John Lennon

On May 9th, you'll know what John Lennon was talking about.

Man, so, so great to see those old clips again. Just look at the emotion in the audience. Other groups may bring forth the fun and excitement, but none evoke the pure emotion of Paul McCartney, George Harrison, John Lennon and Ringo Starr. John and George - such a terrible loss to the music world. I just can't wait to get to "Rock and Roll Heaven."

Have you seen Pauls concert in Red Square? You should. Thanks for that clip, Benny

YW Walt. Yes, I saw the documentary of Paul in Red Square and saw bits and pieces of his performance but didn't see the complete concert. I did see him in concert live at the old Forum in L.A. on Thanksgiving Day in the '80's. I was so in awe at actually seeing a Beatle performing live. He is fantastic and still going strong despite his latest tragedy.

Hey Liverpool guy -- What? You don't like roller coasters?...

Also that is only time that Ringo ever says, "I got blisters on my fingers" ..They, John and George and even Paul, played it the way it was supposed to be played... hard and heavy ... unlike the real slow "Revolution" which was done in four/four time... yes, they had to speed it up to four/eight time on The Beatles Again (Hey Jude) to make it listenable --

I am truly sorry for the following - as it is very troubling to the reader. And I apologize wholeheartedly for it. I do not want to offend anyone at all. But I put it out there for thought only. Nothing more nothing less.

Then the world-wide reaction to it, "Helter Skelter" :

...plus you wouldn't have had the very crazy and insane Charles Manson and the family doing the Tate/Lobianco murders without that song, "Sexy Sadie," and "Piggies" as that's what sick Charlie had them write on the walls and the appliances in their, the victim's, blood.

Manson though, most likely would have engineered these grisly murders even without these songs -- the sick fuck that he is or was..

Believe me, I'm very glad he and the family were convicted of doing these heinous crimes, and he should have been put to death for these terrible crimes.

Enough said.

Jeez John I hate to follow all that descriptive text with but a few words but Helter Skelter just sounds dissonant to me (Manson and all that insanity aside). Of course I'm strictly looking at it from a melodic point of view. :D

I for one think Helter Skelter is incredible.... for a band that played Help to go to that is quite a feat..... it is a scary song but powerful.... some of the best songs in the world are not perfectly played....
