UncleDave, this one's for you - and anyone else who has/had ties to Detroit.

Somehow, we got to mentioning the old Tiger Stadium in Downtown Detroit at Vicky's show. I mentioned some bar near downtown where a number of the Tigers would come after a game. I finally remembered. It was Lindell AC (Athletic Club) and was at the corner of Michigan Ave and Cass. I looked it up and there are several sites with historical info. I used to work in the AT&T Building across the street on Cass.

If you've lived in Detroit a long time, you might also remember Olympia Stadium on Grand River. That's where I first saw The Rolling Stones in about '68 or so.

I was also there for the '67 riots. I was working for AT&T at the time. We had to install new long distance circuitry for the police and National Guard. After a shift, the National Guard would escort us across the street where they put us up in a hotel that was there. I can't remember the name.

After that came the '68 World Series. The Tigers won the last game (game 7) in St. Louis. But once the game was won downtown Detroit went absolutely insane. I was supposed to be working, but had been given 3 days off for some reason I don't remember, lol. But, what luck. I remember I went out to my buddies house in the vicinity of 10 mile and Gratiot. When we heard that the game was near over, we knew the Tigers would take it. When they did, we jumped into Johnny's old station wagon and headed to downtown Detroit. There were people lining the street pretty much all the way. I remember I sat on the rear passenger door, hanging onto the roof, holding a beer in each hand. I think there were 3 of us.

We got downtown, which was already in a frenzy. We had bought 4 six-packs out near John's place, so I was carrying one and the others the rest. We got separated, but I mean downtown was simply packed. The streets were so full that traffic was not moving. Maybe one or two cars might get thru an intersection at a time. I remember a couple of guys walking around with a couple boxes of tampons. Whenever they came to a car full of girls, they would clean their windshields. The price? They'd kiss all the girls, lol. I mean, everyone was kissing everyone. I remember I climbed up on a city bus, I mean on TOP with my 6 pack (still had 4 plus one in my hand.) and I remember tossing one to someone who yelled "Gimme a beer," lol.

There were so many people that I heard that every bar downtown had run out of beer, and people were driving to Flint to stock up on cases and bring it back. The crowds started thinning around 12 or 1. I somehow made it back home, don't remember how. I may have hooked back up with Johnny, but can't remember. But there were no cops anywhere. There was one fire truck that s-l-o-w-l-y made it's way thru downtown to a reported small fire. There were people all over it, lol. One thing I can say about all that is that it was a great healing experience after the '68 riots. I remember the Free Press writing about that.

I remember my friend, Gary Anderson. He's gone now. Gary was a wheeler/dealer. He had 3 or 4 girlfriends plus one he saw on weekends, as she lived in a home for girls. He ended up marrying that one and they had a daughter. Gary had all of his "weekday" girls on every government program he could get to. There were no computers back then, so it was easy for him to get them on welfare, unemployment and a couple other programs I don't remember. We'd go to Kennedy Square downtown over the noon hour. Gary and I would screw around while the girls panhandled. Then at night we'd all go to whatever apt we were staying in and buy beer and drugs for the evening.

Well I got a job in ALaska in the summer of 1970, and Gary and Terri got married. I stayed in touch with Terri, but at some point lost track. On a vacation trip back to Detroit, I didn't know where they lived, so just drove up Cass avenue, which used to be our old hangout area.. I drove past a corner laundromat and there was a little girl sitting on the curb playing in the gutter. When I saw her, I just knew that was their daughter. I parked and went back and, sure enough, Terri was in there washing clothes.

They ended up getting divorced a couple years later and I lost track of Gary (he wasn't a letter writer,) but stayed in touch with Terri. In '94 I went back to Detroit to visit Terri and her new husband. One of the nights they asked if I wanted to go to the bar and have a couple drinks. It was the night of O.J. Simpson's famous "escape run" in the white Ford Bronco. I remember watching it on the TV.

Suddenly I became aware of a presence beside me. I looked around and there was some guy standing a bit behind me. I remember thinking he looked like Carlos Santana. I turned back around and took another drink. Then a voice said, "So what? You don't say hi to old friends anymore?" I recognised the voice and turned around and it was Gary. Terri had set me up by telling Gary I was in town and where we'd be. He was driving a taxi at the time.

I mean, that was such a great moment. I mean Gary and I had numerous adventures back in the '60's. Once we went to see Joe Cocker's movie "Mad Dogs and Englishmen" I swear 40 or 50 times in the Grand Circus theater (apparently some venue now named the Madison.) We had nothing else to do and loved Joe's music. So we'd go to the first showing and stay until closing, 4 or 5 shows a day. Between shows, we'd go out the back door and smoke weed, lol. We subsisted on coke and hot dogs . Man, couple of idiots, lol.

Gary died a couple of years after I last saw him. So I have always felt extremely thankful to Terri for setting that up. For that year or two in the late '60's, Gary and I were best friends.

Thanks for helping me remember all of those old memories, UncleDave.

Those were the days, my friend, we thought they'd never end.

Great stories Walt. Sounded like a great time. Of course I was only born in 68 so before my time but I was 16 when the Tigers win it in 84 and wow what a blast it was.

It's funny how we can start thinking of one memory and how easily it turns into a rush. Glad I could help with it in that small way.

I always tell younger folks, enjoy the moment or event while it's happening and the people you are with at the time. One day you might look back and realize just how lucky you were to enjoy that moment with special people in your life. They might not always be around but you'll always have those cherished memories.

That's a fact, UncleDave. I tell my son, take pictures (then organize them, lol) and cherish the moment. Someday they will be memories you'll wish you could relive.

I know it was just a passing mention, Walt, but it turns out today is Carlos Santana's 75th birthday. This means he was just 22 when he played at Woodstock in August of 1969.

Thanks, Davest. At least you didn't make me feel OLD! :rotffl:

I wasn't AT Woodstock, but thanks to the movie, I got to experience it - without all that mud and rain and starvation, (And I think that Carlos Santana did some of his best work here.) In 1969 I was 26. So, even if I'm NOT older than dirt (Zany! lol) I'm older than Carlos Santana :lmao:.

(Oh, wait. That's not a good thing, is it? Carlos Santana is 75. (Seventy-freaking FIVE.) I guess that DOES make me older than dirt, (Never mind.)) :lmao:

I was only seven, but my brother was 16 and, since we lived only 2.5 hours from there in upstate NY, I'm sure he was dying to go.

What is teabagging? That's where you put 10 teabags in a gallon glass jar and set it out in the sun for a few hours to make sun tea right? :lmao:

Sometimes, in today's world, when you learn something, you really learn something, right?

Personally I prefer licking. But I won't stop her if she wants to put the whole dang thing in her mouth. I just never thought that "teabagging" would involve my crotch,

Tea bagging is also common in video games where there are PvP (player versus player) elements. One character will kill another another and then the player will move the winning character to be over the head of the downed character and repeatedly hit the 'crouch' button. It is a way to smack talk that is just as childish as it sounds.

Cosmo is a great read. Let's you learn about what a woman is thinking. My friends used to think I was nuts years ago for reading it until they saw how I used that information to interact with the ladies.

The best parts are the reader letters and advice articles.

Plus, a former editor of the UK version of Cosmopolitan was Louise Court. She was the blonde woman in the Safety Dance video. I was always more fond of the extended version.
