There are stray dogs everywhere here. I dont like it, but I also don't like the way they do it at home in Tampa. Dogs are rounded up, brought to animal control, given about a week depending on the overcrowding, and stats say that 100 per week are euthanized. Healthy friendly dogs, including puppies sometimes all because there are too many of them.
Maybe the European way is better? They just let them be. They roam the streets and eat the scraps. The population controls itself? I just don't know.

Kind of like stray cats, isn't it? Here in the park, there are several. They are all but one skittish, of course. The main oroblem that I see is that they can carry disease, etc. Not good for them or people.
But Boots stands out. Boots is an orange male whio is about the friendliest cat I've ever seen. He obviously belonged to someone once. He comes to us and let's us pet him. Larry next door feeds him, and, when I see him, he comes over, so I've bought cat food to feed him. Recently he obviously got into a good fight. He had obvious injuries to one ear and one leg. They seem to be healing well.

I can resist everything except temptation.
Here in Rhode Island they have a trap-spay/neuter-release organization. Stray cats are caught and spayed or neutered. If they seem too wild for adoption, they are put in a cat colony. There they are still outdoors and possibly free-roaming (I never asked), but they have shelter, food, and medical checkups. I think it started shortly after I bought my house. I don't see nearly the number of stray cats that I used to, although I am glad I kidnapped my kitties out of the side yard when I did.stickyvicky wrote: ↑April 28th, 2024, 3:36 am There are stray dogs everywhere here. I had an orange cat swing by for a couple of days. I think he or she managed to get a bird. Then I stopped seeing her/him. Maybe the bird feeder wasn't a productive enough use of time, depending n where "home" is.WalterB wrote: ↑April 28th, 2024, 9:48 am Kind of like stray cats, isn't it? Boots has been here for quite a while. But, they're kind of prolific here, and I'm seeing new young ones, too. I have a camera facing the gate/fence in my rear yard. So I'll get 4 or 5 clips a night of cats jumping over the fence in or out of the yard.
