A musical question for Benny. And everyone else for that matter.

"Playing" Bob Dylan...

Thoughout the years mainstream musicians have been selecting Bob Dylan songs on their albums as tributes to his songwriting abilities and to him since he is a great role model...

I can name eight Bob Dylan songs done by other artists....

What can you and everyone else come up with?

Let's see how this plays out.

At first I was gonna say the Byrds 100 times because it seems like all they did were Dylan's songs. My favorite though by the Byrds is "My Back Pages". Super song. I also have a clip of of that song done live in a tribute to Mr. Zimmerman featuring George Harrison, Tom Petty, Neil Young, Roger McGuinn, Eric Clapton and Mr. Dylan himself. I'll see if I can upload it somewhere, it's fantastic as they all take turns on the lead vocals.

I can name 13 different artists who covered Dylan songs.

Just Like a Woman - by Richie Havens
All Along the Watchtower - by Jimi Hendrix
Knockin' On Heaven's Door - by Guns N Roses
Blowin' in the Wind - by Stevie Wonder
All I Really Want to Do - by The Byrds and by Cher
Mr Jones (Ballad of a Thin Man) - by The Grass Roots
Don't Think Twice, It's All Right - by Peter, Paul and Mary
Highway 61 Revisited - by Johnny Winter
If Not for You - by George Harrison and by Olivia Newton-John
It Ain't Me Babe - by The Turtles
Mighty Quinn - by Manfred Mann

Met Bob Dylan in the 60's at a place called the Y-Not Coffee Shop. He was there with Pete Seegar and a friend of ours - Abby Hoffman. Interesting in many different ways...but then again it was the 60's....

Way too many too mention but his is some interesting items... Who woulda thought that Hendrix's all along the watchtower... or the Mighty Quinn were from Dylan.

Current listings contains 5870 covers of 350 different Dylan songs by 2791 artists!

Top ten songs covered: Versions

1. Blowin' In The Wind 375
2. Don't Think Twice, It's All Right 217
3. I Shall Be Released 181
4. Mr. Tambourine Man 176
5. Like A Rolling Stone 172
6. Knockin' On Heaven's Door 150
7. All Along The Watchtower 144
8. It's All Over Now, Baby Blue 133
9. I'll Be Your Baby Tonight 121
10. Quinn The Eskimo (The Mighty Quinn) 118

Very good Benny and Torp!!! :D

Let's continue... Ahh, the group Manfred Mann is a very good answer, as Mike d'Abo is also the singer who replaced Paul Jones. He sang "The Mighty Quinn" and is also known for cowriting "Build Me A Buttercup" with Tony McCauley - made famous by the Foundations. Michael is also the father of actress Olivia d'Abo and also the first cousin of Maryam d'Abo. The d'Abos are a very talented bunch.

I've decided to change this around somewhat. I'm going to add Bob Dylan videos here from youtube.com.

I've always liked this song. It was one of the first acoustic guitar songs that my first guitar teacher taught me way back when I was taking lessons.

From Blood On the Tracks; Here's the first one: (An extra treat as Bob Dylan is performing it live):

The last couple of months I've had an itching to try the guitar again. Although my arthritic hands won't let me play chords I still feel I can manage some lead riffs or some bass lines (after all, I've been playing in my head for the last 15 years or so). I've got my eye on an Ibanez PF acoustic-electric guitar and I'll probably go out and buy it tomorrow. I'll let you know how it turns out.

In order to get to Carnegie Hall ... I think you really need to get a scholarship to Julliard first.

Johnnie Boy NYC,

We as singers think that Benny is correct. Practice and the best make it even without Julliard!

BTW, have you ever been to a Bobby Dylan concert? We used to see him in the shops near Woodstock NY where he lived often. Amazed at how approachable. Amazing what low cut tops and hard nips can get us. He never looked us in the eyes but would chat on and on!

Hey you two. Nice complete sentences, with proper ebonical language... and in the correct Canadian dialogue too!! Very good. But is that in the Western Canadian or Eastern Canadian dialect?

Let me confer with the expert...

In all seriousness, well I saw Bob performing during his born-again Christian phase in 1979 during his promotion of the Slow Train Coming album. Not classic stuff but it was Dylan all the same. Sort of like electric Dylan vs. acoustic Dylan. Just different.

I know Bob lived up there for a time during the 1960s when he played with Robbie Robertson, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel, Garth Hudson and Levon Helm, aka the Band. Music from Big Pink was recorded up there in Woodstock, New York.
