Have you noticed that while the price of oil is going up, Detroit is touting it's new hybrids and fully electric vehicles? They're wondering how much Americans will be willing to pay for their vehicles. Let's see, price you'd pay for a year's worth of gas (or 3,4,5 years, depending on the length of the loan/lease) versus the price difference for a 'green' vehicle. Man, what a decision. Am I having a bizarre thought process?

We went thru the same thing during the shortages of the 70's. After Americans started feeling the pinch, they started buying smaller vehicles. But then the shortage passed and everybody went for the gas guzzlers. Now it's the same. People are starting to buy the smaller vehicles. But, if prices drop, America will go back to the gashogs. Do you know the Speed Limit in West Texas is still 80 mph? And every time I'm out there (I do 65 - 70 - get 35mpg at that speed,) it's almost always the big-assed fancy cowboy tricked-out pick-ups and the big gas hogs who pass me, going like bats from hell. Invariably, I will pass them down the road as they pull out from a gas stop, or they will pass me again. Me? One tank of gas will get me to Dallas.

Why are we in such a big-assed hurry, people? People out here complain about how boring it is from here to Odessa, for example. 280 miles of pretty much nothing, not even radio. Sierra Blanca, Van Horn and Pecos, small desert towns, not much there. So people want to go 80 to hurry up and get thru it. How do I handle it? I have my collection of CD's and tapes. So I put in my favorite, turn on the old Cruise Control (I love you, cruise comtrol teehee,) and sit back and enjoythe ride. I think of the friends I'm going to visit. I think of the friends I saw last month. I wonder when the hell my son will write. I think of where I've screwed up my life, and where I've done good. I relax and just enjoy life.

And, life is good.

Yeah Dave - that's about $4.22/gal - unbelievable. The fuel gauge read a little bit past half way on the scale. About three weeks ago I also paid over $40.00. Though it was much further down, closer more to "E"... Crazy stuff.

They reported today that oil is down $10/bbl in the last week/10 days. But the pump prices keep going up. Remember, the American oil companies aren't gouging you.

WalterB wrote:...and despite all the blame on the Arabs, no one says a word about American oil companies, except to report they have made another billion in profits for the last quarter. They say that they use that money for exploration and drilling new wells. Well, in my book, "Profits" are what is left over after you have paid all the bills.

Today, the price of oil actually went down a few sheikels
Hey Walter - Unless it has changed. You are discussing the windfall profits tax. That has been in effect by an Act of Congress since 1973. American oil companies didn't have to pay corporate taxes (to the Intenal Revenue Service or to the various states (as franchise taxes, etc.) because it takes much capital to outlay, $ millions of dollars, for research and development costs - exploration and drilling new wells. The taxes they pay come into play when an actual oil supply is found.

For example,

1. Royal Dutch Shell Group (A Netherlands Company) finding oil in the Gulf of Mexico. They had the original exploration rights. Now Exxon/Mobil Corporation also has some of those oil rights there.

2. Or British Petroleum, BP as it is known by worldwide (A United Kingdom concern) in the tundra of Alaska for the pipeline. They had the original rights up there. Now it is the joint venture - Amoco Corporation and BP - as well as Chevron Corporation that have most of the rights up there. And who cannot forget the Exxon Valdez disaster up there? They were filling their oil tanker with surplus oil reserves from the pipeline when diasaster struck. Killed off millions of species of wildlife as a result of the oil spill.

If it hasn't changed, the only taxes that these companies would pay, are paid as excise taxes to the federal and state governments however. It does give the governmental agencies substantial dollars to the coffers as the taxes equate to $ millions of dollars. Though again they, as corporations, get abatements.

Oh, and by the way, those exploration and drilling costs become amortizable assets over a forty year life. So the oil companies benefit from that as well. Millions of dollars in assets deferred.

We filled up the jeep last night and it was $62, that's the most we've ever spent on the jeep. Holy crap. We leave today for the cabin and then onto NC from there and the Vette is less than Empty. It only takes super too! I'm going to close my eyes when I stick the credit card in the slot... lol... we better shoot some hot porn and get some more signups! :D

$4.72/gal for our American friends. Yes, I used a calculator. I am mathematically challenged - have to pull down my pants to count to 21. :lmao: :lmao:

Well Walt... I'm anatomically challenged ... how do you get 21 by pulling your pants down? What are you doing? Are you using a ruler to measure something?
