Walt you're an old tech with one too many short circuits... Maybe you walked in front of one too many radars too?? :signhammer:

Stiffy, so what version of Linux are you using at school? Lots of different versions out there, even the current MAC OS is based on Linux.

And BTW if you want to play with MAC OS, see this: http://laughingsquid.com/installing-leo ... asy-steps/

Use this for the MAC OS on your PC, so give it a try if you have the time!! :noway! :noway!

:offtopic: , I know, but something like that actually happened in Alaska. I was out at a remote site named Sparrevohn. All the work crews came out in the summer to do whatever maintenance we had. One of the jobs this summer was to paint the feed horns. We had 4 ea 60' billboard antennas (Tropo Scatter.) We shut down one transmitter so the painter could climb out there and paint the feedhorn. When he came in for lunch we told everyone we were turning the Tx back on, and to check with us before going back.

Well, he forgot. At some time after lunch he came in and asked us if the transmitter was on. He admitted he had climbed out there, and after a bit felt himself getting warm. Don't know whatever happened to him. We did call an aircraft (only way in or out was to fly) to take him to Elmendorf.

Naturally, while waiting, he made the comment, "Hell, I didn't want kids anyway."

That's why most sites will have automatic flashing lights to indicate if the radar is "hot" and if the pedestal is or can be moving. Don't want to get knocked off and break a leg either!! :wtf: :offtopic:

Well, this was in the mid 70's on a system that was built in the mid 50's, so no fancy lights or moving pedestals. But, dangerous just the same. I had a 3-wheel Honda ATV I rode all over. I was gonna ride behind the feed horn once, away from the antenna, but caught it at the last sec and stopped short. I probably would have been OK, since the antennas were aimed at the horizon and the feed horns were 20' or so up. At that distance, the beam would have been way over my head, but I knew I didn't even want to chance that.

Here's some pix for you. They sure bring back a lot of great memories. I really loved my time in Remote Alaska - Sparrevohn, Nikolski and Cape Lisburne.

we use fedora 9(or 10) at school and I"ll probably install ubuntu if I ever get around to doing it. Everyone seems to think ubuntu is a good starting spot cuz I have like very little experience with it.

My teacher told us a story like walts about the guy getting hit by the radar thing.

He said some guy turned the satellite off to readjust it and someone phoned the company and complained about their internet being off so they sent someone down there to see what was up and he went to the satellite and saw it was off so he turned it back on and the guy adjusting it got fried.

So Walt did you do any skiing while you where there?? Use the radars for wiener roasts??LOL Now we really know about you Walt, hanging out at those "remote" sites. Takes a "special" kind of person for that sort of work!! :tp: :walt:

Stiffy if they're using Fedora at school you should use the same thing. You can download Fedora 10 for free from Redhat.com anyway so why not use that vs some other flavor of Linux, at least to get started with? :noway! :noway!

That's where safety comes in. We hang danger signs on transmitting equipment, even if we're alone, in case someone comes up and thinks it just failed and try to bring it back up.

Naw, there wasn't anyplace to ski out there ('cept for cross-country.) Speaking of weiners, tho, our 50kW radio at Thule, Greenland, had 2 large (maybe 0 gauge or bigger) transmission lines leading out to the antenna. There was so much energy in those lines you could walk up to them with a flourescent light, hold it up to the lines and it would light up.
Stiffy, I really envy all the work you're putting into all this. Bossman seems to be pretty knowledgeable about all that, too. Me, I turn it on, and there's Vicky. If I turn it on and Vicky don't come up? :cussing: :cussing: . Vicky, too, learning all this programming and then building all of this. So impressive, people. Keep up the great work.

Well, I guess my radio career was pretty cool. My greatest was helping a great team of people to build a spacecraft and fly it to Venus. They used to sit there and say, "Walt, what you do with those radios is black magic." This from people than could maneuver a spacecraft around the sun 1-1/2 times, then put it into orbit around a distant planet, and be only six seconds off their predicted arrival time. Six freakin' seconds! Those programmers were the real magicians. Then, every orbit, they would turn the spacecraft, point the Star-Tracker at some distant star, take a fix, then turn it back to Earth to start sending more data back to us. Simply unfreakin'believeable.

I say GO, ST1FLER! :cheerleader: :cheerleader:

And, meanwhile, Laura and Sue are probably gnashing their teeth at all this Techie stuff. grrr-r-r-r- :cussing: :1106: dang techies :violent-smiley: Teehee Love you ladies. :iloveyou: :iloveyou:

yea my teacher calls data communications (my course) the black art because sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt. He says the biggest excuse he gets is "it worked at home". Programming is a whole new world I don't understand how people can develop these massive programs even like a game keeping track of thousands of files all doing different stuff.

Oh and bossman our teacher wanted us to use different linux versions at home so we get used to the wide variety of them but ya I could install fedora, we'll see.

soon trio will leave jeb and be knocking on my door with their suitcases in hand :P

St1fler,

:offtopic: But you can have Sue and Laura..... They are very very expensive upkeep. The toys and Porn bills alone and then hair, nails plus they eat only the best of foods! Got them a Sybian and they like the AcuVibes and Pure Wand combo better and a lot less cost. Anyone need a used Sybian?

you are a nerd if you understand what they are talking about

this term at school we have to do a class-wide project for our schools open house. We'll have to present it to whoever comes into our computer lab. We might be making a network bomberman game which sounds pretty cool haha. It has to be a networking thing because my course is "data communications"

These are the 5 things we narrowed it down to after having about 20 ideas:
Bomberman
Pictionary
Snakes
Poker
Botnet

coding in linux is so much better than windows holy crap. The win32 API sucks and message system sucks too.
