A lot of you guys know I have a black lab named Ziggy that I cherish more than any human. He's 12 years old now and having significant joint trouble. Not to mention a few other things.
I have tried a variety of things to help him with, does anyone have any ideas? Love to hear any suggestions!

Sasha,
Wow Ziggy in dog years is like 84, no wonder joint issues. Jeb is a true dog person and said to try the spice "Turmeric" in Ziggy's food or cook on a burger if he will not eat it the dog food. Check on Google as to how much. Jeb thinks about 1/4 teaspoon a day to start and maybe 2x or 3x per day for a while to see what works. Search more on Google for more info.
FYI - "Turmeric is thought to reduce inflammation by lowering histamine levels and it may also stimulate the adrenal glands to increase production of a hormone that reduces inflammation. It is often used to ease joint pain and inflammation associated with arthritis. However, it is also used to reduce joint pain and in inflammation in other disorders as well."

I know that Joint Juice (Glucosamine) works for me. But then, I'm a human (or so they tell me haha.) Don't know if you should feed it to a dog (it's a liquid) or if he would drink it. Double check with your Vet. Good luck with easing his pain.

I believe vets give some form of glucosamine to animals. Once I called to ask about that and the vet would not confirm nor deny this. They wanted to push their super expensive products. I was asking if I could give him osteo-biflex and what dosage.WalterB wrote:I know that Joint Juice (Glucosamine) works for me. But then, I'm a human (or so they tell me haha.) Poor old Ziggers, I'm surprised the vet didn't give him prednisone (in small doses) it really eases the pain and reduces inflammation, and it's really cheap like maybe $7 - 10 dollars a month.... you just have to be careful when you give it to them, because then they feel good, like superdog, and do too much...

They have given his that before, but I guess it's not something he can take for extended periods of time?

He's 12 Sasha, that's already old for a big dog like a lab. I'd say don't worry about it. Yes it's bad for the liver over extended periods of time, but it's not like he's going to be taking it for the next 5 or 10 years. The most important thing right now is to make him comfortable. He's a sweet dog and deserves to live out the rest of his retirement happy and comfortable. Hope that came out right.

yes i think it did come out right,
is a good time as any to take good care of him,
10$ a month for prednasoze to help him walk,
maybe theres an alternative shot that won't hurt the liver
just an idea, shots don't have to be 12 months a year
you can still give it to him to feel better during the cold winter months
it'll give him a lil boost during the winter months
and do checkups for his liver a few times a year.
If he starts to show signs or he's out of house more in summer, stop the shots.
its nothing compared to all the love he gives you.
just my imho.

Yes, that came out just fine and you're right. He's doing pretty good for his age and he's happy, so that's all that matters. I just always wish and hope there is more I can do, you know. He's funny, he won't go up the stairs unless I have my hands under his thighs. It's not really much help but I guess it gives him some security since he kinda slid down mid ways up a few times. He's being silly right now, gonna go play with him, lol.....

That's wonderful, I knew that would work... just don't give him too much or he'll think he's superdog and do more than he should and be even more sore later....
