Ubuntu: Anyone tried it??

I currently run it under a dual-boot along with Windoze, and thus far it's working well. It doesn't have nearly the apps as Windoze has, but for an OS it's pretty neat, and relatively fast.

If you want to try it out, you can either have a distro disk made using an ISO file, or you can download Wubi and install it as part of a boot...or you can do as I did and install it as a dual boot.

Any Souljahs here have tried Ubuntu?? If so, whaddayathink?? Like it or spike it??

Tried it a few years back but, I wasn't keen on it. Might give it another try soon one of these days...

tried it last year, it was ok, i liked the different interface just for change. its something to try and you don't have to install anything, they have LiveCD you ca just put on a USB key with UniversalUSBinstaller if you don't want to waste a cdrom and a bunch of time.

so i tried it, not bad and light on resources, but i need ma games !


btw i kinda like that m$ finally did something like that, the win8 installer does that now, dvd, usb, dualboot.
Big step up for our boys&girls in Redmond finally joined us in 21st century lol.

Apple? sure if you're the artist type maybe, but most ppl need to just work or play on puters, and Apple just doesn't make it easy.

Now i'm not against Apple at all, in fact i admire the simplicity and sometimes i wish windows was that simple i guess, but sometimes too simple don't make a right.

Since I will assume that that "Ebonics" smack was intended at me, allow me to translate for you.

"Windoze" is simply a colloquialism for "Windows', used by people who think that Windows isn't worth all the hype.

"Souljahs" is simply phrase of term meaning "Soldiers with soul", It's just my play of words on being a VNA charter member. Nothing "Ebonics" about it at all. I may not be a Mensa Society member, but I didn't skip or fail English or grammar class.

And for the record, I've worked in retail for more than 10 years, among others. Trust me on this, I wouldn't have survived if I didn't have some knowledge or skill in communicating with my customers.

Now, Women of Trio (or whomever has been impersonating them and running this nonsense at me for the past week of so): you might want to look in the mirror at yourselves if the best you can do is throw drive-by insults at me everytime I post here on a topic. But, remember one thing, ladies: I've been here at Vicky's forum long before the VNA was even born, long enough to remember Frank and Bossman. And, far better people than you have thrown every insult at me....and I've not only survived, but thrived.

I've held my tongue for a while hoping for your brain farts to pass...but if you insist on continuing this, then I can use my perogative as mod here and block you. Please, for Goddess' sake, check yourself, because the only people you are wrecking is you. I'm not going anywhere.

Now i'm not against Apple at all, in fact i admire the simplicity and sometimes i wish windows was that simple i guess, but sometimes too simple don't make a right.

As a MBA in the USA and 25+ years in low tech I have some dumb questions. Why is Apple the largest company now in the World and have $100 BILLION in cash on hand?

Maybe by creating the best Customer driven products? Dump all android Apple OS ripoff phones, "Windoze" laptops and PCs. The new iPad 3 will rock your socks off! Can't wait for iPhone 5 or whatever that ends up as. Few have any concept of how Jobs and Apple apps have changed the world. From music to much much more!

it sure does, i did that for such a long time too, nowadays i'm contend with doing other kinds of ventures.

Apple just could'nt compete with windoze so they went another way.

and please, The new iPad 3 will rock your socks off!, its just a sideways upgrade from ipad2. just the screen brighter and a quad core cpu. but doesn't enhance usage more than ipad2 did.

when they get more horsepower from a newer processor then we'll talk socks.

Ok back on topic, yes i tried ubuntu, its very nice graphically compared to the days of linux during the 2000's when i actually started to get interested (i did my college courses on unix in the 90s, so cmd line? piece o cake lol).

Ubuntu: i didn't get to try Ubuntu specifically for long enough to say i'd adopt it, only couple days since this is a work machine i can't have down time too long. it was ok, lil simplistic if you like that. but nice eye candy.

And i found the stuff you can do on Windows is very doable on Linux, it is getting more and more mature.

it has built in windows executable support (through a program called Wine, it lets you run Windows software on other operating systems. With Wine, you can install and run these applications, just as you would under Windows.)

Tho idk about games on Steam if it works and/or introduces any lag. And as we all know, Framerate is life !

Other than that, it would be a nice change from windows too.

its fast and well made, but it does still need a lil bit more driver support from companies, like for wifi for example. but its getting there.

i use a core of linux on Usb for most tech problems, or a mini windows depending what the problem is.

But over all i like the linux philosophy free made by people for the people. And some distros give you 5Gigs cloud storage online. If it integrates into the os as win8 does with their online M$ accounts, it would put your data at your finger tips on other cloud enabled devices where ever you are.

If anyone wants to try a liveCD on for fun (ie: no need to install so it won't mess up your system just for a testdrive)

There are instructions to burn an iso to cdrw/dvdrw or use a usb (which i prefer) and get your iso's to boot on a usb key with this lil program : Universal USB Installer – Easy as 1 2 3

Anyhoo, yeah ubuntu is ok, there are 100's variations of linux out there to try, all or most with the same kernel and utilities, just different look and feel.

Its like ice cream 37 flavors and more ! lol
