I created this fundraising page for one of the shelters that I volunteer at. This is my friday place not the sunday place. I started going here more because they need help more than the first place I've been going for the past year.

They now have 59 dogs, they were never expecting to have that many, but people don't spade or neuter their pets and the pet population keeps growing and growing. People keep dumping dogs off on them and they don't have the heart to say no. The owners are wonderful people, they have been putting all their own money from their personal business into this place since the day they opened it, several years ago. but their business was hit by a huge storm/tornado up north and the insurance didn't cover it because it was an "act of God". So they have gone from being very well off, to struggling themselves. They can barely pay the $1500 a month electricity bill on the shelter and had to give up insurance on it. They themselves have given up every luxury in life that they used to know, so they could keep this shelter going. They used to have 4 full time employees to take care of 50 - 60 dogs, they had to let 2 of them go because they don't have the money to pay them. They rely even more heavily on volunteers now to run it.

What pains me the most about it, is they were never set up to have that many dogs. They don't have enough kennels. The kennels are 10x10 and cost about $500 each. There are 10 dogs there that don't have kennels. They are in crates. Not just temporary or just at night. These dogs live in crates full time. I almost wonder if the dogs would be better off dead? It drives them crazy being locked up like that, so they become aggressive and scary and then less and less people are willing to consider adopting them. It's a terrible downward spiral. The only time they get out of the crate is when they have 15 minutes yard time, or when a volunteer shows up to take them for a walk. It just breaks my heart to put them back into a crate knowing they'll be in there for the next 23 hours. It's not natural, it's against everything in the dogs genetics, they are wanderers, protectors and social pack animals. They should be curled up at the foot of someone's bed, not in a shelter, but at least if they have to be there, it should be humane. Some dogs have been there in crates for a whole year!

If (God willing) I can raise enough for 10 kennels, the next goal will be fencing material so we can build them some yards so each dog can get out and run a few times a day. They have plenty of land, it's a ridiculous waste of space that these dogs are locked up inside an old warehouse in crates, (with no AC and no heat btw) when they are sitting on 11 acres. We tentatively planned out 4 one acre yards. If I do win Miss Freeones, the largest chunk of the proceeds will go to this. The only thing I'm gonna take out is what i need for the new cam software upgrade, the rest will go to them.

I just want to improve their quality of life. Not sure you want to hear all this, I know it's not sexy, and I'm sorry, but if you really wanna be my friend, and know what goes through my mind, this is it.
lastresort900.gif
Please, I hope some of you can see it in your hearts to make a donation, it doesn't matter how much it is, every single bit helps get us closer to getting them out of crates. I made the first donation to get it kick started and I'm hoping my friends will follow suite.

Thank you,Vicky for putting this out here. Carmen turned me onto a show on Animal Planet called "Pit Bulls and Parolees",I'm sure you're familiar with it. It is a shame that more people won't adopt dogs or cats because of some negative fear or idea they may have or,not enough money,or "we don't have the space" or any other excuse. I can appreciate what you do to volunteer for the animal shelters and that is what I find sexy! It's not glamorous by any means and if more people saw this,I'm sure they would do something to help. I will do my best to make a donation to you and help out your cause,Vicky. You got my vote!

Got yours Walt! Thanks so much babe, you rock! I just got home from there, they sent me home earlier than usual cause they could see my back was hurting. They gave me all the old dogs with arthritis today who could barely walk, and all the small dogs like jack russells and chihuahua's. I usually take the big unruly dogs, but we had a good day today, luckily a few volunteers came out and everyone got a walk! That's rare for over there!

I am only one; but still, I am one. I cannot do everything, but still, I can do something. I will not refuse to do something I can do.

My donation is in, too! :icon_wink:

You made me cry as I read this, this is so sad. I don't have a credit card but when I send you $ to renew my membership I'll add some on for you. Not sure how much but I'll do my best.

It's so ironic the day you put this up my niece's school had a rally and auction for abused animals. They watched a video of the conditions the animals had been subjected too. After a few kids took all the dogs out for long runs and played with them. When she got back to the farm she went and took the 2 dogs we have and ran with them.

You guys are all so awesome, now I remember why I love you all so much! You know I sent a plea to my friends and family including my mother and brother? You know what I got so far? Nothing, one friend said he would donate but he hasn't yet, and haven't heard a thing from any family! Amazing to me, guess this really proves who my real family is!

Don't be afraid to leave comments there too if you want, just keep it clean, lol...

You are the bomb Mike and Connie! But you already know that.

So I called my Mom, and asked her if she got my mail. She said no. She got the mail before that and the mail after that, so isn't that strange. (ie she's fulla baloney). So being the pitbull that I am, I resent it right away and then called her back. This time she said yes she got it but couldn't donate. She said, "honey you know we are on a fixed income". That is the biggest bullshit. She buys whatever she wants. She smokes 2 packs of cigarettes a day, a couple of liters of softdrinks and chocolate. She may not be rich but they eat out anytime they want. I said "Mom, I'm talking about $20, you can donate $20". She finally said OK i'll talk to hubby about it. I was so frustrated I hung up. Sometimes I can't even believe I am related to her. How selfish.

Another $100 Donation!YOU Guys RULE! Now you are gonna make me cry! lol... The opposite of my stinkin' family.

I'm on my way to the sunday shelter in a few minutes. After I walk my own two critters. I wasn't gonna go today, but one volunteer is gone camping, one has a broken foot, and one is sick in bed with the flu, so if we don't go, the dogs won't get out at all.

Well, you rock pretty damn good yourself. You started all this, and you give of your time that you sometimes may not have, or would rather spend elsewhere. But you give it up and "go to the dogs."

So, we salute you as well.

That's awesome Julie, I just realized that offline donations are way better anyway. I just got one and realized the entire $50 goes to the dogs. I thought this website only took 5% as their fee, that's what they advertise everywhere. But then there is an extra 3.5% they charge you to transfer the money to you! So really its 8.5%. Not that I wouldn't have used them, just they weren't very upfront about it.

We are trying to get the first kennel tomorrow! I'm so excited!

The place that is supposed to have them didn't have any in stock and they said it was $100 -150 to have one drop shipped, Turns out they are not 500 each as originally told, they are $730 each, plus the shipping, we almost have enough for 2, so ordering them, but trying to find a place anywhere in florida that has them, so we can drive there and pick them up to save the shipping fee. Even if we have to bring our trailer, still worth the time and trouble. Nothing is ever easy.

aww thank you V we you too xoxo !

Just found this add for a 10x10x6 kennel for 250$ but its in texas, http://for-sale.yakaz.com/10x10x6-dog-k ... cv4qg3risi

is this what you're looking for ? and look at who's selling it, might be to good to be true or it might be kismet ;)

or there's this one its only 7.5x7.5x6 but its only 250$
PetSafe 7.5 x 7.5 x 6 Boxed Dog Kennels (Model 75756)
http://www.ebay.com/itm/PetSafe-7-5-x-7 ... 3365f93a79

what would it cost to build one with materials from a hardware store? i'm looking at the hardware store sites and for 160$ (here) you get a fencing 5'x50' that's cheap so you got your four basic walls and a top. Maybe there's a more local store that sells just metal fence. Add some metal posts, a gate (or make your own, its just tubing) and something for the dogs to sleep on the ground, can't be more than 350-400$ tops i'm thinking.

home depot in usa has some chain link 6'x50' for 90$
http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1v/R ... TV-Fhwz1jk

it's a kennel if you put your mind to it ;)

if u make the kennel 10x10x6 you use 40 feet of that 6'x50' that leaves 6x10 aprox for the top (if needed or just use elsewhere) and recup the fencing from the hole you make for the door too. need some tubing to solidify it and voila, a nice cheap kennel that costs u half.

That would work out nicely and cheaper than that pre-made kennel of 730$+shipping.

Get a good bunch of volunteers to help you put it together an you have 1 kennel for roughly half the price.

if i was closer i'd volunteer.
