I got an Asus with windows 7. It's a 17 inch but it's still really light! The best thing? You can't hear it at all. No sound of a fan or anything at all. You wouldn't even think it was turned on! And doesn't heat up either! My sony is not that old, but overheats and shuts itself off 2 times per day now. And I can't cam on it cause all you guys hear is the fan! I'm loving this new computer, it's lightning fast too and thanks to NewEgg.com it was cheap! Yay! I was just processing camshow archives tonight and I swear all the files processed in half the time. I think the modem is much faster too.

My new Gateway is like that. Super quiet and doesn't heat up. Now if I could just get rid of that damn Win8.

I have an Asus myself and love it, too! Image

It's clear we all agree on the fact Windows 8 sucks big time. Like HT mentioned last year ... Win8 is as bad as WinME and WinVista. Image

I've been thinking about getting a new PC, which do you pguys think is a better OS win7 or win8 ? Also, I can't decide whether to get a new desktop or a laptop.

Vicky, if youdon't mind me asking, was the Asus very expensive?

Well, Crank, if you're ready to learn a totally new way of doing business, go with Win8. I've never seen Win7, so can't really comment on that one. But apparently Win8 was developed to be used on a touch screen, and then adapted for a pointer and mouse, while still using the Win8 desktop. Most posting here don't like it.

Thanks for the insight,Walt. I'm leaning toward a laptop, but there are so many choices that it's hard to decide. It probably wouldn't hurt to replace my desktop though, since it's pretty outdated. It's about 7 yrs old running winXP , started out with 512mb ram updated to 1.5 gb, but it still won't handle some newer programs like IE 8 or 9 plus a lot of other things.

decisions, decisions....

My old XP must be close to 10 years old (desktop) and is still running fine. Well, I've had to reload my OS a couple times, but it runs great. About the only real "Game" I run on it is MS Flight Simulator, which runs great as well. I know it has to die some day, but I'll use it til it does.

My laptop is only a couple months old (with Win8,) so it should be good for awhile. I like the laptop because I can take it on trips, and I can sit over in my easy chair and use it (wireless.)

I've pretty much decided on a laptop, now just which one?
Vicky are you still loving yours? Can you tell me what influenced your decision to buy that model?

for those not loving windows 8, you can get a windows 7 cd and load it on there for about 90$ , here at http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=45271 ... omoid=1302

You'll get a genuine windows 7 dvd and key. all you have to do is move your important files to a usbkey, then pop that dvd in and let it format and install on your hdd.

btw if you really want speed, get an SSD. Samsung 840 Pro or OCZ Vector are my top choices (both 5 years warranty and available on ncix above).
Could get an Intel aswell but expensive and not much faster.

so vicky when you have a chance write us your model number plz?

or if you still have the link to the newegg page.

i'll do some research, i'd like to know what video card you have in there, i'm guessing its just a built in and not a heavy duty nvidia or ati, if its that quiet.

That's what I got and the reason i got it, is it still had windows 7 on it, cause i can't stand windows 8 (read my blog, lol). It's a nice big 17 inch screen, not to heavy to carry for when i travel, it's superquiet, never hear the fan at all, and it doesn't heat up! My old laptop would burn a hole in my jeans, lol... Plenty big hard drive at 750 gig, and 8 gigs of ram is great for dreamweaver or photoshop.

Only $679 no tax and free shipping! It's a steal! This store is so great, I'm so glad I found out about it!

I'm sure you can similar ones though, and they will be cheaper if you don't need the wide 17 inch display.

its an intel hd 3000 videocard, 2nd Core I7 gen code named "Sandy bridge"

"In addition to the GPU, the chip also houses some dedicated units for decoding and encoding HD videos. On the IDF Intel demonstrated the encoding of a 3 minute long 1080p video to an iPhone compatible format in 640x360 in only 14s. "

30seconds for a 2 pass encoding of 3min vid is excellent.

Walt, it depends what you do with your laptop i guess, you could go with an i7 or save some $$$ and go with an i5 , works great for Flight Sim and do web stuff. With an added video card , it will be a stronger than the intel 4000 of the latest core i5/i7's , if you're looking, i'd suggest anything with or above the nvidia 530m/630m should be more than ample for Flight Sim.

You can look on newegg for laptops with Windows 7, here's one i found just typed windows 7 in the search box (make sure its says PC & Laptops on the left of it). make sure its 64 bits.

ASUS F75VD-EB51 Notebook Intel Core i5 3210M(2.50GHz) 17.3" 6GB Memory DDR3 1600 750GB HDD 5400rpm DVD Super Multi NVIDIA GeForce GT 610M

Equipped w/ NVIDIA GeForce GT 610M

here are more search results: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLi ... 719&y=-112

oh and i would definitely punch this baby up with an SSD.

Anything like a Vertex 4, Vector or Samsung 840 pro in the 256GB range is the best price/value right now imho.

When you see how slow a 5400rpm hdd boots, (over 50sec) VS an SSD (10 seconds to desktop), you'll wonder how you lived with a slow hdd before lol

Vicky i highly recommend an SSD as your boot drive, its great for fast starts of your photoshop and adobe premiere.

Another recommendation is not to clone your hdd if you've been using your laptop a long time but to simply install the ssd and reinstall windows from scratch. A fresh install will always been faster than an old clone copy. But since your laptop is brand new its fine to clone. Here's a little video showing how to do it.

Note: not all SSDs come with the external caddy and cloning software, if you get one without, write back and i'll give you instructions how to do it.

and some speed comparison HDD vs SSD just your wet your appetites

Ht,
Since you're such a puter guru, I'd like to ask you a question.

How would I transfer data from my old PC (desktop) to a new PC, either desktop or laptop? I'm still on my first puter and haven't tried anything like this.

Well first cloning will only work if its from the same computer to the same computer, it won't work if its from one machine to another.

So since you want to basically import all your stuff from your old machine to your new, i would just use either an external hard drive or flash drive, move all my docs and files to it and your porn too. you need to know where to look tho.

The other method i would use is if you have a router (or a modem with multiple ports you can use) plug both computers in it, create a network share or a "homegroup" on your new machine and transfer your files to it like that.

if you want to do it by hand, most your files should be in c:\users\<yourname> like documents, images, videos, favorites, etc

All methods a bit more explained in detail :
http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ ... mpute.html

if haven't tried the Windows Easy Transfer program, i don't really trust those kinds of programs, i do it by hand.

I just set up the windows homegroup, it was a snap! So tonight i'm just gonna start transferring everything over from the mydocuments on the old laptop to mydocuments on the new laptop while I"m sleeping.

Walt, Please accept my humble apologies, I know you're also a computer/electronics genius. Hell, I'd take free advice from my neighbor's dog if I could get it.
Thanks for the input HT, most appreciated.

I was looking at local store ads, I've narrowed it down to:
Lenovo 59345254 15.6" screen 8gb RAM 750gb HD.
or Toshiba L875D-S7332 17.3" screen 6gb RAM 640gb HD.
Both on sale for $399.99
