That is is pretty intense , the entire "opt-in" concept is being widely used in lot of areas to skirt first amendment rights. because technically you still have the right and access to something but now its on you to secure those rights instead of them being in place for you to begin with

Well as a person living in the UK, this has caused uproar with people. It's not just internet porn but also lads mags like zoo & nuts etc but also page 3 in newspapers they are trying to get rid of as well. This is typical conservative thinking and governing. I agree with them trying to protect young children from it but for the vast majority of adults that use porn responsibly this is no more than censorship.

There is freedom of expression here in Britain but only to a certain extent until other people or the government find it offensive. I'm not sure what will happen with the pornstars and companies here if this does pass through parliament, will definitely cause problems. If it does pass I will opt in because I use porn responsibly and the government aren't censoring me that's for sure.

To be honest Vicky, I can't see this ever passing and coming into law because A) public anger is too strong and B) how are they going to enforce it properly and what will they do if people don't follow? They can't put them in prison because there aren't enough prison spaces here anyway. Also this government say a lot of things and then U-turn on them so I'm not that worried.

One thing that is for certain is this won't be the last you will here about this.

I would be amazed if this genuinely came to pass as it's almost impossible to implement properly, especially when it's being dealt with by outdated people (the government) who have no idea about the way modern technology works. A pretty funny example was demonstrated by a radio caller who said he couldn't access his brother's wildlife photography site on his mobile phone because the 'adult block' was seeing terms such as 'blue tits' and - hilariously - 'fat balls'.

Outdated people in the government is exactly right, although not surprising with the conservatives that always have lived in the dark ages while in their private lives probably go to sex clubs and take part orgies etc, serious double standards from them. It's not just this issue that the conservatives are in the dark ages, pretty much everything they announce seems to be. What you mention here theboy about the example, that is just one of the problems it would cause. The example you gave the person wasn't even attempting to look at pornographic material but because key words like "Tits" & "Balls" were used he was blocked. Something like that just takes censorship too far and too be honest if it ever did pass, we here in the UK would be no better then communist states like China that also do things like this. I think the government need to understand that the vast majority of people in the UK look at porn responsibly. If the government hadn't of got rid of thousands of jobs in the police etc who were dealing with the very few that take part or view pornographic material (that shouldn't be able to be viewed anywhere) I'm sure you understand by what types I'm talking about here, the government wouldn't need to think of things like this.

It just speaks to the larger problem we all face when it comes to adult content. While the UK doesnt have a Bill Of Rights, there are many folks here in the US who are trying to find ways around the Constitution in the name of "protecting our children from porn". (California Measure B anyone?)

Those who crusade against porn do so because they feel the need to push their values down our throat. And no matter where you live, the people need to fight it back. Today its porn...tomorrow you cant say anything negative about the government. Its a slippery slope...

On the subject of Cameron's porn filter: This will work just about as well as New Coke did....meaning, this will be a MEGAFAIL.

First, one ISP has already announced that it will defy Cameron's order and will NOT filter their bandwidth....and I'm sure that others will follow.

Secondly, if the filters proposed are anything like the filters currently used in libraries here in the US, then plenty of other speech and expression other than sex will get caught in the crossfire of the filters.

And third....those who are preposessed to view kiddie porn already have their means of getting around the filters and getting access to underaged illegal material, and will do so even with all filters working.

As usual, this is more about some people wanting to control the sexuality of ADULTS using the old "Save the CHILDREN!!!" ruse to justify sexual fascism. I say, opt in to porn with pride, Brits, and tell Cameron to shove his filters up his ass.

Quite a few good points in that article that sum up the whole scheme really well. Namely that any kind of filter system is just about the stupidest way of going about this idea, and perhaps more tellingly, that anyone determined to view porn will still find ways to do so. It's not really much different to people using proxy servers to view content unavailable in their own country or the nefarious ways in which people get around blocks on torrent sites, etc.

That story was in the newspapers over here Vicky during Christmas week. Gave me a right laugh. Everybody in Britain knew that female MP's site was going to be included. Typical Tories though trying to enforce a nanny state on us. Like I have said before I get that children need to be protected, however these filters just penalises every person in the UK who watches and uses porn in a safe way like myself. Like the article you included Vicky mentions that people are already finding ways round the filters.

I think it's a bit much for the filters to block sexual health and education sites. Sexual health and education in schools is bad enough without them blocking these sites as well. That's one thing I will say about Britain is that we aren't open enough about sex and how to do it safely etc. As far as I am concerned kids should be getting better sex educations in schools and at home the attitudes of parents need to change and be more open, like how they are in Holland. If we did adopt a more Dutch look on sex etc, sexual diseases & teen pregnancy would fall dramatically. I watched a programme a few months back and I learned that Holland has the lowest rate of teen pregnancy in Europe and most of that is down to how they educate their children about sex from an early age.

Going back to the filters, although it's now been implemented it won't make much difference because either people will find ways around them and be one step ahead of the internet providers or people will just tell their internet provider that they want the filter taken off.
