Day 12 - a triumph for (mis)use of VAR!
1. Russia really reverted to their true form today - underlines that they had previously played probably the worst two teams in the tournament. They were lucky it was only 3! Uruguay handled it so well - they look like an outside bet for semis or even final. They are well-organised, have two great centre-backs and can score - Suarez is always a threat and the other guy Cavan opened his account too.
2. Russian female fans are so hot (calling this the Mike & rokker feature!) 3. Portugal do just enough to get through - I was reminded today that they drew all but one of their matches (at 90 mins) in Euro 2016! Today they got the draw just - but didn't set the world on fire. Ronaldo was rubbish (again) and that penalty miss - Oh Dear.
4. The VAR in the Iran v Portugal match was awful! The use of it broke up an exciting game and it still got two big decisions completely wrong! Iran's penalty wasn't handball - the ball was headed from behind Cedric onto his hand from less than a yard, how could he avoid it hitting him. Secondly, how did they make out that Ronaldo should get a yellow card? In all honesty it shouldn't have been a card at all; but if the ref decides he has struck another player in the face with his arm, it is automatically a red card!
5. Salah didn't want to be there for Egypt today - to be fair he obviously isn't fit and shouldn't have been made to play. He spent all his time on the half-way line and when he missed that second one on one with the keeper it was certain he wasn't fit!
6. Spain need some lessons in defence! Having said that, perhaps they have just got their bad game out of the way and will play well in the rest of the games to the final. I bet they are glad to avoid Uruguay though!
7. Rant time - I am always so angry when a 6ft prime physical specimen who works out on leg and upper body strength falls over when he gets tapped lightly on the shoulder (or any other part of his body)! Come on guys, have some pride and stay on your feet - especially you Pepe of Portugal.
8. Goal of the day - has to go to Quaresma of Portugal - what a strike with the outside of the boot. Pretty poor game otherwise, but great goal
9.Individual play of the day - the penalty save by the 40+ keeper of Egypt - Essam El Hadary
Tomorrow's results are
Australia v Peru - score draw say 2-2
Denmark v France - France by 2
Iceland v Croatia - first 0-0 draw (sadly)
Nigeria v Argentina - Argentina by 2

Day 13 - Argentina do what Argentina do (unfortunately)
1. I'm really glad Peru got a win - they were far better than the Aussies and could have got a couple more. Why they didn't play in the classic white shirts with red sash is a mystery (actually it isn't they wore the red ones to try to sell them)
2. Australia have a fantastic talent in the making. The youngest player at 17 was Arzani and he looked good on the ball! Only problem is that he will need to come to Europe if he isn't to simply fade away - the standard of the Australian league is about League 2 in UK, so he won't learn much there.Holland might be a great place to start they are good at nurturing talent.
3. First 0-0 draw today - suited both France and Denmark. Interesting to see how France cope with Argentina. Drop the POgba and they'll be fine
4. Goodbye Iceland, Nigeria, Peru and Australia - I will miss that lot!
5. Apparently Messi's goal (good one too fair play) was the 100th of the tournament. It has also been a record for penalties - everyone is blaming VAR
as I'm depressed about Argentina not getting knocked out I'll go straight on to tomorrow's results
Serbia v Brazil - Brazil by 2
Switzerland v Costa Rica - draw
South Korea v Germany - Germany by 3
Mexico v Sweden - draw

Day 14 (written on Day 15 as I was so upset that Brazil didn't get knocked out)
1. Germany have only got themselves to blame - they were awful yesterday, and where were their strikers?? Fair play to South Korea for taking their chances
2. VAR is fighting a draw - great call for first Korean goal, but did they really have to check the second??
3. Brazil played much better yesterday, bur Serbia just rolled over and gave up. They never really thought they had a chance and because of that they didn't! At least Saints have sold Tadic!
4. Sweden were a surprise yesterday! Easily got past Mexico who have been pretty good and have had lots of pundits on their side.
5 And here's a Brazilian for Mike
Today's results are (not too excited about today's games really)
England v Belgium - depends on teams selected, probably draw, maybe England by 2
Panama v Tunisia - Tunisia by 2 (could be one of the dirtiest games of the competition)
Japan v Poland - Poland by 1 (but come on you Blue Samaurais
Senegal v Colombia - Colombia by 2

Shootouts are a crappy way to decide who moves on, but it's the only way after 2 hours of soccer.
That Croatia/Denmark shootout was remarkable...never seen anything like it.
Congrats to Russia for moving on in the tourney. Enjoy the next few days before you lose to Croatia :)

I watched that shootout! That's gotta hurt! The Denmark Goalie, whose father was also a goalie and who was there watching, looked like he was going to cry. He was a great goalie, this really sucks! A few more shots and they could have been even again. Just so unfair! They should just keep playing, go into overtime, like in hockey!

I'm looking forward to Belgium punching Naymar in the face in the next round...the man is an embarrassment to sports in general ...that guy wouldn't last 10 seconds in a hockey game, the big puss-bag

HUGE game for England today... as an ex-pat I would love them to win but somehow I think it will go to penalties where they always lose...
