A few weeks back I was followed and contacted by a lady on Instagram who was soliciting 'bitcoin' mining.. "She" (if it even was who it said it was) posted quite a few pictures.. They sent me a message which I did'nt reply too immediately, and only after a second message from them asking why I was silent did I reply, and ask them what it was "She" did..
It was explained to me in a nutshell they worked for a bitcoin mining company which employed the latest, expensive software to "mine" this unseen non virtual currency....
I replied it was'nt something I knew alot about and would definately want to research it more on my own..and they replied yes understandably but wanted me to download "Whattsapp" imediately and add them there before I went on with my day..which I did not do..
I was told all they needed from me was a valid email address and no money would be exchanged..
Well I went back and looked at her photos more elaborately and noticed alot of them had hashtags of Azerbajanian flags etc... So I once again replied and asked 'her' how would I even know she was who she said she was and asked her where she was from in which her reply was "Chicago".. well I smell bullshit.. She then replied that trust laid on them not me because after mining my bitcoins I was obligated to send her company 20% of it..
I just ignored it and funny a couple weeks later the profile didnt appear on Instagram any more or blocked me or whatever, but it appears to be non existant now..lol

lol...its a good thing that I know nothing about bitcoin., but once you get caught up in a scam, you are pretty aware of the next one coming down the pike. If I get anything from anyone I don't know, it goes right in the trash...keeps this old guy out of trouble :)

Absolutely, Mike, Scotty. ANY time someone contacts you out of the blue, especially via social media, and asks you to download something, you run like HELL in the opposite direction immediately. Block them, whatever you have to do. And, if someone was involved in something legitimate, why would they send you a picture of a pretty girl?

If there is something out there that you are interested in, do your own research and contact people from YOUR end.

the bitcoin people I know off, aren't asking you to download WhatsApp and other things, so yeah that sounds like a scam, just like the Ethiopian/Nigerian/Ghana love scammers, just like anything else my bs meter goes on high alert.

Yeah, legit Bitcoin suppliers don't or shouldn't be asking you to send any money to them. If someone does, it's clearly a scam.

Someone tried to hit me with a similar scam around 6 months ago: they claimed to have hacked an old AshleyMadisondotcom account I had and discovered "intimate" video of me "fooling around" in explicit chats, and "threatened" to release the pics and vids to all of my Facebook/Google followers if I didn't pay up $1,000 in Bitcoin. Of course, they never produced any pics, because (1) scammers like them never do and (2) I never even used that damn account for even one chat. Also, I'm single and nearly 55 years old, so WTF would it matter if people saw me in an adult chat?

Bitcoin doesn't seem any safer than using plastic anyway, and it's far more complicated to use. Thanks, but pass on that.

I still haven't figured out how to spend it if you had it?

A few times we talked about accepting it as payment for the sites, to give people another option, but it seemed enormously complicated to me, and isn't it volatile? It can lose value quickly? So if we accepted it what do we do with it sell it?

Plus will govt agencies be looking at us more closely if we accept it?

I had a chance to read up on crypto-currency today. The premise is quite fascinating, but I for one will probably never be trading in bitcoins.

I'll leave that to smarter, younger people

Crypto currencies are extremely volatile. Bitcoin has been especially crazy.

January, 2017 it was worth $969
January, 2018 it was worth $19,499
January, 2019 it was worth $4,177

In my opion it is like straight up gambling; might as well be playing slot machines, or PowerBall, hoping to hit it big. Major Financial Institutions won't touch it. And neither will I.

It's like any other form of investing. We all know any investing is gambling. You only invest what you aren't afraid to loose. I'm into it. I invest in the mainstream world and in crypto. But very lightly. I also tread into the decentralization and anarchy ends of the internet waters. I've always been into weird culture. I like crypto because its more about being anonymous. It's the main difference I notice.

Scotty, that's totally a scam. Actually, you want to get in touch with someone legit in crypto talk to truthradar on twitter. I follow him. He's a cool guy. He has a lot great advice on his blog.

It’s funny because people were telling me it was worthless 6 months ago. I was like, it has quick peaks and valleys. Now they are asking me about crypto. I’m like yup, it’s doing well. It will sink again. It’s just a matter of time. It’s a gamble. Take the risk if you can.

Facebook announced that they're releasing their own cryptocurrency, Libra, the other day. While it brings with it a significant potential user base and mainstream exposure to cryptocurrencies as a whole, it stands to give Facebook even more direct access to users financial information.

Would you trust this guy with your financial information?

yeah, i know what you mean.

in hindsight, bitcoin would have been even better % gains.

i knew about it back when it was first coming out too, when the price was well under $1 USD.

back in 2010, the early days of btc, someone exchanged 10,000 bitcoin for two large Papa John’s pizzas. Roughly $93,000,000 based on today's price.
