While I can get how using Pornhub and YouTube as free upselling for your sites rather than established channels might not get you paid nearly as much, I still don't believe that someone who used the media as much as Mia did can say that she only cleared yearly less than the poverty rate.

I'm more with Tasha in that I believe Mia's heart wasn't in porn to begin with, that it was just a passing fad for her to get her notoriety for her sports reporting (a la Lisa Ann and her Fantasy Sports empire), and that the shame and humiliation that she felt from doing porn is ruling her current judgments against the industry.

Having said that, her experience is hers alone, and it must be respected. So must the experiences of those who actually like porn performing and sex enough to continue to grind and hustle and sell themselves and make a successful brand where they can get paid and get creative control.

Someone please explain to me why this woman's name keeps popping up. She did three months of work years ago, was in a handful of scenes (13 I think), and we are still talking about her because????.....why is her story so damn interesting? 1) Because she used Pornhub when it was in its infancy to prop up her brief porn "career" and as upsell for her sites.

2) Because she parlayed her notoriety into her second "career" as a local sports radio analyst, and wants to detach her porn "career" as an albatross around her neck to future earnings.

3) Because the mainstream news media loves a story of an "ex-slut" gone "good" who repudiates her former profession, and finds any reason to bash and trash porn and the women who willingly do it for fun and profit.

4) Because.....her boobs. Same people egging her on to slam porn are wanking off to it privately.

So, basically, if we take Gustavo Turner's article proper credit, Mia Khalifa basically got into porn to please her then husband as a "hotwife"; then parlayed a highly controversial "hijab" sex scene and taunting of Muslims (as will as ample promotion of her huge fake tits on Pornhub and YouTube and those Twitter pornbot timelines) into her very brief (three-month) stint making active movies; and now is using that notoriety and history as a basis for flipping into a new brand as a "victim of porn" and "male exploitation"...all to promote her new sports journalism career.

Basically, she's Shelley Lubben but without all the drugs.

Personally, Vicky, this is just an act she's doing to rebrand herself as a "victim" of porn while simultaneously exploiting her old life to sell herself. This is nothing new, see Linda Lovelace of the 1980s. Exploiting the established media stigmatization of porn and women who perform in it in order to get paid is an old and tried and true means of stepping up, especially if you already feel shame and denial for doing such dirty things on screen to begin with.

It's also very easy for Mia to blame her personal shame and humiliation for doing porn on the men who bought her vids for jerkoff material, and on the men who produced her vids for "exploiting" her and "coercing" her to make these vids based on "appealing to male desire". That also is standard antiporn "feminist" doctrine; that "sex is what men do to women, not what women really want". I suppose this is the way Mia thinks she will ultimately get the payday she didn't get from doing porn movies.

Please don't bring Linda Lovelace into this, from what I understand she was abused physically and mentally, most of the time she was covered in bruises. Sometimes they had to postpone shoots because of it, or struggle to cover them with makeup. There is no similarity between her and any of the others that you mentioned.

I do agree that it's ridiculous how little Mia made and I do believe that is true. Porn hub has more money than God, and everyone else made a fortune off of her except for her.

She was and is so popular because of the hijab. And porn in her culture is super super taboo. People think if they see someone plastered all over the internet that they must be making tons of money and that's so not true. If you have no intention of seeking out opportunities and building a brand then doing porn scenes is pointless. Sounds like she got caught up in something that she didn't want to do and i get that. But yeah, she uses her porn name so porn has gotten her to where she is today.

My understanding was that Linda Lovelace was forced to perform at gunpoint. Remember, back in the 70's porn actresses really had no protections. It was a dangerous time.

She was killed in a car wreck in Denver about 2 miles from where I lived (She actually was severely injured and died about 3 weeks later.) A pretty sad ending.

that's why I don't like the lumping of people all together, each person is different circumstances, as Walt and Vicky said Linda's was a tragic circumstance.

Also a side, and if Vicky or anyone doesn't mind answering are one's who start out in porn really called "newbies" and not consider pornstars. I know when I started in wrestling I was a rookie(a really green one) but was still considered a pro wrestler, just wondering cause the article says all that.

To me, a "star" is someone who has established themselves over a period of years. They have a great following and are mentioned everywhere in the industry. And they get paid well, too. I guess it's certainly possible to reach "Star" status in 3 years. But apparently she wasn't known until someone decided to read/watch this interview to find out what the big deal is. That's where the problem comes in. Just because you read something doesn't mean you are interested or a follower or anything. But it is still reported as "10,000 people have read this article." Then people say "Ooohh, she must be popular. " In fact, it doesn't mean that at all. All it means is, like I said, "10,000 people have watched this." It says nothing about is she popular? Is she a "star?" In this case, it doesn't look like it, except, apparently, to Mia. Have you ever heard the phrase, "a legend in her own mind?"

I don't think star power and fame and number of followers are interchangeable, or even measures along the same axis. Star power in particular implies a quality that transcend fame or number of followers. A person can be famous without having either star power or a large number of follwers.
