One of the vloggers I follow on Odysee does a live stream three times a week on multiple platforms. He starts out on Rumble, Odysee, YouTube, and several others I don't use. Then, partway through the chat, he shuts down YouTube. Anyway, someone in the Odysee chat has posted several animated gifs at times. It turns out they can be easily downloaded. There is a theme to them. One of the gifs was posted in a smaller format at normal speed. Then they (or someone else) posted a larger version that had been slowed down. I used the speed version from the first one and the larger size from the second one to "fix" the speed in the larger version.

I think the above were posted last Friday. Today, a different perspective was posted.

Here is a nicely rendered presentation about the depths of various shipwrecks. My one disappointment is that they did not include the Edmund Fitzgerald, which sank in 1975 in Lake Superior at a depth of 530 feet (161.5 meters).

Geez! And, remember, 5,280' is one mile. So 18,000' is 3.4 miles underwater.(5,486m.)

Interesting. I think they could have included the Tirpitz also, as a counterpoint to Bismark.

Seeing the name Thresher brought back childhood memories. I remember reading the news stories about its loss when I was in high school.

I did not know about the Tirpitz. It looks like it was "sunk" in fairly shallow water. Wikipedia says 82 trapped crew were rescued by cutting through the bottom of the hull, which was sticking out of the water. Tirpitz was broken up for salvage by a joint Norwegian and German operation. A similar thing happened to Costa Concordia: part of it still sticking out of the water, and scrapped after the accident. So, I guess the video makers didn't know about the Tirpitz. Wikipedia has a picture of the wreckage. It would have made a nice comparison to the Costa Concordia sizewise. Although, after I did a little poking around, it looks like the Tirpitz might have been in 68.89 feet (21 meters) of water. It might have scrolled off the left of the video before Costa Concordia came into view. Still, it would have made a nice size comparison to the other nearby wrecks.

I once lived in a place (back in the 60s) where there was no TV and very little to do. I must have read The Dam Busters novel at least a dozen time. That's why I know about the Tirpitz.

The Dam Busters. That sounds like a war movie I've seen. Was it Guns of Navarone? Not sure. But the resistance fighters were on a mountain above a large dam. Bombers were supposed to take it out, but missed their target. So the resistance fighters apparently had some torpedoes or something. They got into the water with the torpedoes and steered them toward the dam. They got out, the dam blew and everyone cheered, lol.

In fact, wasn't "The Dam Busters" a war movie? Lemme look.

Yes, it was. Guess there's another one to watch. Basically, a true story. I see the book was written by Paul Brickhill. I've read maybe 3 or 4 of his novels. Loved them.

Paul Brickhill was the author of "The Great Escape." He also wrote "Reach for the Sky," about Douglas Bader, who lost both legs in a crash, but came back in WWII to win several medals, including the DSC (Distinguished Service Cross.)` This one was also made into a movie. I haven't seen it, but I remember reading the book many years ago. I may still have it in my paperback collection.

I was watching a "differences between American and British Hotels" video, and they mentioned the lobby.

That made me think of this classic:

Which was lampooned by The Simpsons:

But, thanks to YouTube, I also became aware of an apparently Aqua-Teen-Hunger-Force parody as well. This metal band really cares about theater politeness!

There is also this seriously disturbing thing that I couldn't really watch closely. You have been warned.

Here are some clips of people who should have called professionals for help with their unwanted trees. Although, I kinda wonder about the ones where a large piece of equipment falls over. Who would have those other than professionals?

I am glad I hadn't seen this before I had some trees removed from the front of my house. They probably looked cute when they were first planted, but when I bought the house they were over 30 feet tall and only 10 feet from the front door. And they were leaning towards the house. The service that removed them had the police block one of the lanes in the road in front of the house, and did the top-down section removal seen in some of the clips here. Fortunately, nothing internet-worthy happened.

While there are probably many videos like it on YouTube, this particular one was recommended by a political blogger I check in with. He said he didn't own a chainsaw and, after seeing this, never plans to.

While comparing the two different versions of videos for Natasha Bedingfield's "Unwritten" (over on the "All Other Music" thread), I looked up the term "pixelation". This is an alternate term I learned in high school for stop motion animation. Apparently it is now used also for when you can see blocky pixels in an image. Anyway, this neat video was suggested. Although it was apparently done in 2013, the games it references are WAAAY older than that. I think I did some stop motion animation (along with negative scratching for a transporter effect) when I was in Film Communications in high school, maybe 1981 or 1982?

Anyway, a fun video using simple effects (which is how this thread got started if I remember correctly):

That's cute. Takes a lot of work to do something like that. I remember early home computer how the graphics were highly pixelated. That's where I first time I heard the word and, in fact, have never heard the usage you mentioned, Erik. (Blocky pixels in an image.) To me, "stop motion" has always been , well, Stop Motion, lol. Would this video be a combination of those two ideas?

I remember my first home computer was a Commodore 64. I started learning "Basic" language programming so that I could make my own programs. I made a few, but that idea rather quickly went the way of most of my ideas.

I've always liked flying. So, when Microsoft came out with Flight Simulator for the C-64, I was on it. I was glad to have it, but it was pretty disappointing. The graphics were generally squared off (watch the original "Money for Nothing" by Dire Straits.) The plane movement was quite jerky, which made it quite hard to fly. I played with the game for a while, but it got disappointing pretty quickly. I was quite happy when the first "modern" PCs came out. The graphics were so much smoother, and Flight Sim became fun to play. I still play with it. Whenever I read of a plane crash, I feel I have to fly from El Paso to that location using Nav-Aids. I usually fly the Beechcraft King Air 350 Twin. Then I fly from VOR to VOR to get to the proper airport, then line up and land.

My first computer at home was an Atari 130 XE, although I had already started to learn programming in high school thanks to a particularly forward-thinking teacher named Mr. Barnhardt. He obtained a Wang computer and taught with it, although I don't remember if it was BASIC that we used to program it. Then, when TRS-80s came out, he obtained a whole row of them for the back of his homeroom (which I conveniently was in). He also let us use them for an hour each day after school was over. When I got the Atari for home, I borrowed a 6502 assembler book from a school friend, and wrote a 6502 assembler in BASIC. Then I used the assembler to speed up the three slowest subroutines of the compiler, making the compiler bearable to use. Since I was limited in the number of characters I could use for filenames, and I was in high school, I gave my "ORiGinal ASseMbler" the name ORGASM.

Also, I love that MTV video. Some of the people who worked on that animation went on to work on a CGI kids adventure show called ReBOOT. It was a cool show about life inside an older computer called Mainframe, with various human and non-human inhabitants called Sprites. Bob, who is a Guardian from The Web, has come to live in Mainframe and protect it. He is forming a romantic relationship with Dot Matrix, a businesswoman who has several businesses in Mainframe. Most of the trouble comes from two viruses in the system: Megabyte and Hexadecimal. Anyway, for Dot's younger brother Enzo's birthday (he is about to age from 01 to 10), they interview local talent in order to put on a show. One of the failed auditions is a two-person band named The Dires that looks a little familiar:

phpBB [media]

That video has also apparently been parodied by other groups. I agree with the viewpoint of the first group, and I disagree with the viewpoint of the second group. I can't fault their sense of humor and technical capabilities, however.

Haha, I like the videos. Partially because I like the song, but the videos themselves are cute.

My biggest problem is that I have a short attention span. The number of projects I have started and never finished would fill a book. I liked the early Basic programming, even subscribed to a few magazines that helped a lot. But rather than stick with it, I'd get distracted or bored, and would move on to something else. Even now, I've got 3 or 4 projects I am trying to complete. But I just don't get to them as much as I should.

I learned even more on-the-job. I needed to learn, for example, how to manually program an HP controller so I could do my job. I'd sit down, read the books and practise, and it all helped me advance. I've mentioned before my job on the Magellan project. Most folks went to school to learn their trade. I learned thru on-the-job training, both company offered and self-taught. But it was al fun. The way I put it was that, as long as it was my, job, I knew my job, I knew what I was supposed to do, I enjoyed the work and I worked at it. But, once I went home, I was lost.

When I got laid off from Lockheed Martin at one point, It took close to a year before hiring picked back up and I got rehired. In that year, I was pretty much lost. I had no clue what to do, where to go, etcetc. I went out and found temporary jobs, which were fine except for being temporary. So when Lockheed picked up again, that lasted for another 9 years. But, on my own? I was simply clueless.

I've known what pixelation was for years, but it is always fun when the term pixelated bukkake comes up in Cards Against Humanity.

I know I have mentioned Wil Wheaton's show, Tabletop Games, over on the gaming thread. I will link to their game of Cards Against Humanity here, just because Aisha Tyler is such an awesome babe. I don't think the term "pixelated bukkake" came up in their game, though. Does the pixelation refer to what the normal effect of bukkake looks like, or to the likelihood that it will be censored in any photos of it?

I was SO disappointed when I found out that the technology to do Max Headroom fully digitally wasn't quite there yet, and that Max is actually Matt Frewer wearing appliances.

Fortunately, we CAN do it now, and someone has put the technology to funny use:

While talking with Vicky at the end of her cam show, I brought up the critter thread and demanded that she give me the bird right now, meaning post the video she has of a bird attacking her window. I ALSO wanted her to flip me off, which she did. I was motivated to phrase it that way by one of my very favorite Warner Brothers cartoons, A Tale Of Two Kitties. It features caricatures of Abbott and Costello (Babbett and Catstello), and is the first appearance of Tweety.

I posted this one a while back, but we have a lot of new members now. So, with football season fast approaching, I felt it was time to advertise a new product for the aspiring home-viewer football fan.
