On this Veterans Day, November 11th, 2021, We have discovered that we don't have a Veterans Day topic. So this is it.

Every country has veterans, some on the good side, but some not so good. But all are someone's family. Some are fathers, some are mothers, some are sons or daughters, brothers, sisters, aunts or uncles or whatever. All gave their time in defense of their country. And all deserve recognition for the sacrifices they gave, whether they died in battle, or made it home to their loved ones. Let us remember those Veterans, and especially those who gave their all. They gave their all that the rest of us might live in freedom.

I will start with thanks to my father. He never went overseas in WWII. But he did go to Guam after the war (we went with him for his year tour in 1949. I still remember parts of it.) He also spent a year in Korea during the Korean War. Dad also got a Bronze Star commendation for his efforts. I was, of course, quite proud of him, altho, as a kid, I didn't understand all of that.

He started out as a Private in the mid 30's or so. He wanted to be an officer, so he got his GED, then studied and took the tests. He didn't make it. So he tried again. The second time he made it. He retired as a Major in 1956 and we returned to El Paso. He then made a second career in the Civil Service as an Administrator at the La Tuna Federal Prison in :La Tuna, New Mexico.

He was a Supply Officer, but had to learn some basic self defense as part of the job. I still remember the day he came home and told us of the fights and the belligerent inmate he had to subdue. He could do it, too. he was about 6'2" and maybe 240 lbs. I damn sure never talked back to him, lol

I loved my dad. He was a Hell of a man. Outstanding morals, outstanding values and loved his family. I used to say that Mom and Dad gave up their lives to raise us kids, myself and two sisters. But they didn't give up anything. They were doing exactly what they wanted to do. And they did it well.

I still miss you, Dad. Thank you for your service. And thank you for us.

And, you, too, Mom. I miss you both every day.

Let us hear about your Veteran, or your personal experiences. We must NEVER forget.

Thanks for setting this up Walt. I was trying to avoid starting a new thread.

Sounds like your dad was quite a man. You must be very proud of him. I've never had to subdue a belligerent inmate. But I have been inside a high security prison. And I'm very glad that there are strong bars keeping some of the inmates away from the world at large.

Lest we forget. N'oublions jamais.

Thanks, Lance. There is never a problem setting up a new thread. The problem is finding one that "fits your gizzard", lol. (John Wayne movie quote - The Shootist, lol.)

Oh! Is he a vet or in the forces?

My brother was in the RAF for a number of years. He served in Germany for 3 years in a front line squadron.

This Veterans Day this year I just honored my family members that I could remember (my uncles), my day, my cousins and in-laws by doing a little post on my Twitter and Facebook page. I will try to get the pic here. I served in the Navy, my dad and uncles were in the Army, my cousins were in the Air Force, 2 in-laws in the Navy and 1 in the Air Force.

Hope all veterans every where had a good day!

Zany
Enjoy each day we are not promised tomorrow!

At the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month I did indeed observe the two minutes silence... I had a sign on the counter at work to let anyone know the shop would be observing the silence. I am amazed that there were still a couple of people trying to speak or get attention when it was clear what we were doing. As always I thought of my grandad, as he is the only one in my family who did serve... I have his WW1 medals still, framed, on display on my stairway - and his ARP bell and truncheon by the front door as he was an ARP warden during WW2.
