Me and my girlfriend do this thing one day most weekends. We will get in the car and drive up/down the freeway and pick an exit and just drive into the Michigan countryside to see what small towns we can find. We will look for antique shops or small out of the way diners to eat in by taking back roads and random turns and not using a map.

Last year we found ourselves in Sheridan during the syrup festival. They had a parade and vendors it was fun. We are going back in a couple weeks. I'll let you know how it was.

Yesterday we changed it up and went to Toledo OH. We went for lunch at Tony Packo's, made famous by Klinger in MASH. Food was very good. Stuffed cabbage was excellent. And get the fried pickles. The walls are filled with hot dog buns signed by celebrities. It was started by Burt Reynolds in 1973. We then drove around Toledo, hit some stores. Then drove home.

We plan to go back and hit the Toledo Zoo and a Mud Hens game.

I'll update you all on the syrup festival.

As a directed trip, get up to Frankenmuth if you haven't been. A "quaint" old German town. Lots of beautiful architectural beauty, lots of shops and great German food.

Went last fall. The chicken dinner was delicious. We stopped at Bronners for Christmas ornaments. That's their main items and other Christmas related stuff.

I never thought to do it in Florida when I was there. I'd love to hear what you would find.

There are some very strange places in Florida! I just bought a book called "Freaky Florida" lol... I met the author and he signed it for me... Can't wait to read it and find all those places!

How many Walmarts are there on the list? 🤣

And to be labeled Freaky in Florida, it must be out there. I'll have to look up that book.

Walmart...if I was playing Hide and Seek, I'd head for a WalMart, because no one would ever find me. I haven't been inside one for over 20 years.

Oh wow! Maple stuff is still going on in Michigan? I had no idea. It wrapped up for me in March. I always find it interesting further north how much longer and later certain things go. How as you go further south, they are into the strawberry season. Where I am at it feels like asparagus, peas etc.

Have fun! I am a big fan of sugaring. I cannot wait to add maples to my little rural paradise in time and do my own sugaring. I also want to add bees too!

We picked up a bottle of syrup and a jar of maple cream. It's like maple butter for toast and such. It's delicious.

Then on the way back we stopped at a jerky store and bought a kangaroo jerky stick and some flavored meal worms to try.

I can't wait for strawberry season up here. Yummy

The kangaroo was very tender surprisingly. The worms had no real taste just crispy like a very fine potato chip. While I was eating them I thought of being on one of those survival shows and a text blurb popped up saying,"these worms Dave found will give him 1 gram of protein. He'll need to find more to survive his remaining time on the island" 🤣

Great minds and 2 peas😂

And i thought I was the only one who had goofy thoughts like that. Sometimes I'll just start laughing when I think of something, people around me just stare. Many people think I'm nuts when I say some of the things I'm thinking out loud. That makes me laugh more🤣

It depends on where you are. When I lived in Buffalo, NY and then again in Erie, PA, Lake Erie would always act as a huge heat sink. It would grow cold enough over the winter that the weather remained cold through the end of April, then it would warm up through the summer and keep the weather warm until almost Halloween. I would always tell people that living near the lake just pushed all the seasons back by a month.

Yes, bodies of water affect the weather. But I absolutely hate it when they talk about Northern Ohio and "Lake-Effect snow." Fer crissakes, I don't care what helped it along, snow is SNOW! Tell that couple trapped in their freezing car for 6 hours how lucky they were because it was only "Lake-Effect" snow.

My response is always "I lived in Denver for 17 years. The Rocky mountains cause rainstorms to build up in the summer and snow in the winter. But we never called it "Mountain-effect rain" or "Mountain-0effect" snow. :lmao:

I got to hear about Lake Effect snow in two cities: Rochester, NY where I grew up (Lake Ontario), and Buffalo, NY where I went to school (Lake Erie). I never heard anybody add the "only" descriptor in front of it.
