Well, here we go again, folks. Another trip around the sun, lots of hassles and heartaches for the past year, but there was a lot of good and heartwarming love around the world as well. We have not yet reached the days of Mad Max.

Being 79 (and 3/4, lol) I have been through a lot of Christmases. Both from memory and from old pictures, I can relive my Christmases (please, no "Xmas,") and see how my views, thoughts and ideas have changed over the years. I have a couple of pictures of Christmas at my grandparents house (Mom's parents.) Those were such great days. We would gt up, have our Christmas morning, eat breakfast, then head out to "Mamaw and Papaw's house" for Christmas with them. Then, Mom and her mom would whip up a really nice Christmas dinner. Mamaw had a nice dining area, so the table was covered with a nice tablecloth, the candles and deco were placed and out came the food. We'd say Grace, then dig in. Such wonderful memories.

I can also follow how the world has changed over the year. But one thing that has not changed is my belief that, with enough LOVE, you could conquer the world. So, while that may be missing in a lot of places and a lot of lives, Love LIVES. Love never stops caring and moving forward.

So, please, love each other. If there's something in your life that you don't like? Don't want to deal with? That's fine. Move on with your life. Look forward, not back. There is no room in a good and decent life for hatred. You can be mad, you can be angry. Those emotions you can work through and get over. But "hatred" has, very simply, no place in this wonderful world that we live in.

So I wish you all a happy, wonderful and merry Christmas. Please post your thoughts, desires, wishes, anything you'd like to say. I generally live my life through the music I like. So, here's a couple I like to start us off.

I added this to the previous post, but while I was editing it Vicky snuck in with a very nice comment (thanks ), So, I grabbed the edited stuff and put it in a new entry.

As I was saying, this year, maybe this is more in line with my mood. The lyrics are just awful, but the deep voice is better than the version I found from the live-action movie.

And it sounds like the same voice actor (which I just found out was Dave Barry, not related to the columnist) from the cartoon "Hare Conditioned". I love the play on words in this scene:

You're a mean one Mr. Grinch from Dr Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas was sung by Thurl Ravenscroft. I never heard of him and always thought it was Boris Karloff who narrates and is the voice of the Grinch until I looked it up.

I had never heard of Mr. Ravenscroft, either. Nice job! It turns out he also did the voice of Tony The Tiger.

Merry Christmas to everyone and please be safe whether you stay home or will be traveling. I agree with Walt that we need to remember love all year round. It's okay to be mad or angry but don't let hate consume you! Hate will only bring you misery, love will conquer things right before your eyes if you look for it. Check on your neighbors and love ones. Sending a card or making a call to someone just may make their day even better.

Remember Christmas should be about love and caring for each other. I know we all have those people who we just rather not spend time with but remember we don't live with them if we are lucky. I find people who seem miserable all the time are the ones who are just don't know how to be happy. Enjoy the little things that make you smile and laugh. Work on keeping your peace, your health and your happiness. Sometimes we have to make a sacrifice.

I will not be around Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, going to my sister's! I will be ready for VNA on the 26th!! And I know I will need it!! HaHa!

Zany
Enjoy each day we are not promised tomorrow!

This seems to be a pretty good article on the Star Wars Holiday Special. I only perused it, and liked the YouTube clips they have presented.

Two warnings:

1) Get too close to the bottom of the article and some sort of launcher kicks a player up in the lower right corner. Turning off JavaScript fixes that, but also disables the YouTube clips.

2) I think there is a lifetime exposure limit to the Star Wars Holiday Special. I saw it on television when I was a kid, and was disappointed. Then I got a VHS copy, and suffered through it again, bringing back the pain. Then I got a DVD copy when my VHS conked out, and I don't believe I made it through a third viewing. Carrie Fischer once said that she kept a copy and put it on if guests were staying too long at any event at her house. Weird Al made a reference to how cool it was at one time to get a copy of the VHS tape near the end of his music video "White and Nerdy":

"I saw it on television, and was disappointed. So I bought a VHS copy. It brought back the pain, so I bought a DVD copy. That was as bad as the others."

So, self-flagellation is your thing, Erik? Did you expect it to get better with each copy? What do you do for an encore? Claw your eyes out? :rotffl:

Well, a little self-flagellation (movie-wise) has been my thing. I enjoyed Mystery Science Theater 3000 in their more creative moments. Here is a short collection of clips from "Prince of Space". It's punching down a little when you pick on dubbed Japanese imports meant for little kids, but I enjoyed their treatment of the film anyway.

phpBB [media]

I also used to watch "Speed Racer" after highschool every day, so my friend and I could mock it the next day. Speed Racer was mocked by several other cartoons later in life. One of my favorites was the treatment Dexter's Lab gave it. Unfortunately, this clip does not include the ending of the skit where Chim-Chim burns himself on some lava and everybody just laughs at him.

But, getting and keeping a copy of The Star Wars Holiday Special isn't just about trying to enjoy an awful movie. George Lucas hated the film so much that he apparently once said he would take a hammer to every copy of it if he could. It was broadcast before the widespread adoption of VCRs, so the only reason that thing survived is due to some well-off early adopters who could afford one. The old bootlegs used to be rated on the quality of the copy, which depended on how many times it had been dubbed and whether it came from the best of the original copies. I once described my memories of the show to a friend at work, and he thought I was imagining things. He missed seeing the original broadcast. I don't remember whether I showed it to him myself after I finally got my own copy, or he saw a reference to it somewhere else, but he finally was convinced it was real. Anyway, by getting copies we could preserve a piece of history that George Lucas wanted to send down the memory hole. The purchase of a DVD copy was just a recognition that VCRs were about to go extinct and I needed to get a copy that worked on newer technology.

Also, Boba Fett was introduced in a cartoon, probably watched by Chewy's son, Lumpy, within the Holiday Special. I haven't tried to watch The Mandelorian, but I understand it is about Boba Fett. I remember the drawing style as being overly "stylized" and "artsy", the dialogue was strange, and Boba Fett abused the animal he was riding for no apparent reason. I don't know how the character became likable enough to escape the Holiday Special into the mainstream canon.

Having too much sex can cause memory loss. I read that on page 69 in a medical journal on the 4th of May in 2008.
