Hi guys,

uhm.... thats exactly the way Japan gets rid of old, retired people. They ship them around between Japan and Australia (or elsewhere) for the rest of their lives.
... and if one of them dies from time to time (oops) the captain has the right to bury them at sea . This is very cheap because you only need a big bag and a flag... sing an anthem, watch a few bubbles > thats it!
... and don't wonder if you see sharks, not dolphins, swimming in the bow waves of your ship...

So... if you like the company of people with a maximum of senile stubbornness, sitting in their wet diapers (again) and repeating everything endless times > go for it!

BTW... a place in a german retirement home costs 4,000-5,000 € each month (with a poor service...). So, the offer of 30,000 $ per year sounds pretty good!

To be honest... I am a landlubber... I become seasick even in a rowboat on a little pond....

So... cruising around (...for the rest of my life)? ...not my cup of tea

It looks like they want to export this "Japanese Business Concept" all over the world...

And sometimes, even cheaper than living at home.

Back in the olden days I was travelling by steamer from Trieste to Bombay. The Suez canal was closed due to recent hostilities between Egypt and Israel, so we had to take the long way, around the Cape. It was a 6 week trip for me, 12 weeks if you were going back to Trieste.

Much of the steamer was filled with German retirees, and many of them said they were on the boat because it was less expensive that staying in Germany for 12 weeks over winter!!

(BTW, port stops on this trip were Venice, Nice, Barcelona, Tenerife, Cape Town, Durban, Mombasa and the Seychelles.)

Its hard to describe what has been going on in my life, and things are still not resolved. A lot of work. Very convoluted personal issues. A trip to Cuba over Christmas 22. Oh, and surgery for cancer.

The cancer was diagnosed in May and the surgery was in October. The doctor believes the chance of any recurrence is negligible, but I will be monitored to make sure there are no flare ups.

And Easter Monday I'm off to Ozland to visit my daughter. Vicky, I'm not sure if you remember the discussion we had some time ago about flying to Australia, you thought the trip was too long. Ottawa to Sydney is 23 hours and 55 minutes, with one flight change in Vancouver. The Vancouver Sydney leg is 16+ hours in the air. I'll let you know how it goes.

Omg! I can't even imagine being on a plane that long! How do they even have that much gas on the plane to fly 16 hours?!

My surgery was so simple I hardly think of myself as a cancer survivor. In and out the same day. I did pick up an infection that dragged things out a week, but that's about all.


Your question about how much gas on the plane got me researching. Apparently the old Boeing 747 Jumbo just used to burn a gallon a second. The newer twin engine 777s burn over 10,000 lbs of fuel an hour!!

I found an article that stated that Jet A fuel density limits set by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) is between 6.46 and 6.99 lbs/gallon at 60 degrees F. So a gallon a second at 60 degrees F is 6.46 to 6.99 lbs per second. 10,000 lbs/hour is 10000 lbs/3600 seconds or 2.78 lbs/second. Forgetting the word "over" (which could mean anything), the 747 is burning 2.3 to 2.5 times as much as the 777s.

The density number came from an interesting article a pilot wrote about always being able to make it from San Francisco to Tokyo, even with a headwind, but not always being able to make the return trip in one shot. The analysis of fuel density, temperature, and weight is kind of neat. It is a short article with a couple of drawings.

There is a reason the 747s and Airbus 380 fell out of favour.

Fuel consumption and big jets is a complex topic. The plane will be burning much less fuel at the end of a Vancouver Sydney trip than at the start, simply because its already burnt so much fuel along the way its much lighter near the end of the trip.

And speaking of headwinds, Air India has (or used to have) a flight from Mumbai to San Fran over the Pacific. But because of winds, it was more economical for the return flight to cross the US, Atlantic, and Indian oceans and Africa.
