The Long and Winding Road is one of my most favorite ballads, if you can call it a ballad. Although Phil Spector overproduced it, I'm still a sucker for violins and slow songs.
Have you heard the Beatles "Let it be....naked"? The long and winding road is done in it's original state without the fluff. It's good no matter how the Beatles work it.

If I may brag for a moment, I was one of the first people in the United States to hear the Beatles. I was in Baltimore in late '63 (when Kennedy was assassinated,)* with my girl of the moment. We were cuddled on her couch in a darkened den looking out at the rain and listening to the radio. The DJ came on and said a friend of his had just returned from England with a recording of a fabulous group that was turning heads there, and he wanted to play it for us. It was, of course, "I Wanna Hold Your Hand."
(* No snotty remarks like, "Dang, Walt, they had music way back then???" allowed, you miscreants. :lol: )
My favorite? Like most groups, I like their earlier stuff. Being a Rocker (but not a Rokkerr,) I like early Rock, Boogie-Woogie, Rock-a-Billy, etc. I like most all of the early Beatles "rock" stuff. I also Like John's "Imagine." It's hard to pick one favorite. I Saw Her Standing There, Here Comes The Sun, She Loves You, most all of their albums and movies...onandon adinfinitum.

Well, during the recording of "Hey Bulldog" --- you can actually hear John screetching out the voice of the Head Blue Meanie...
Yellow Submarine , in my book, is the all time best Beatles movie. Next comes Let It Be , then Help, and lastly A Hard Days Night.
"Mull of Kintyre" cannot be considered because it was actually devised and thought up after the Beatles had broken up. In 1974, Paul was living on his Scottish farmhouse with Linda, and the kids along with Martha, his sheepdog - yes, his idea for "Martha My Dear" off the Beatles or White Album - and he and Denny Laine, of Moody Blues fame, both came up with the idea of using bagpipes in a song after recording "Junior's Farm" - So Mull is actually a Scottish inspired folk song but it needs to be classified as a Wings song.
"Another Day" - that could be considered a Beatles song as it was recorded in late 1970, just before Paul went to the Court over that receivership issue of Northern Songs, Ltd and Apple Publishing, Inc., which actually led to the first time of the world hearing of a Beatles breakup.
"Come And Get It" - with the Lennon/McCartney moniker is another one of Paul's songs that was a breakthrough hit for Pete Ham, Tom Evans, Joey Molland, and Mike Gibbins as the group called Badfinger. It appears on Magic Christian Music. That movie starred Peter Sellers, a very good friend of Ringo. Ringo plays Peter's gardener in the film....
..Three of the most obscure Beatles songs that I can think of are the John and Paul penned, "You Know My Name, Look up the Number" and "What's the New Mary Jane" as well as George's "Not Guilty" get honorable mention here by me..
I'm partial to "Dig It" - and no.. not the 45 second blurb off the Let It Be album but the 12 minute opus off the "Let It Be Sessions"; The Beatles: In A Play Anyway. And yes, John does name more people and things than just Doris Day, BB King, the FBI and CIA (if you wanted to know) ... This comes to you as part of a bootleg album done by Calico Productions, Inc. Yes, I even pulled out the LPs for this post. I have so many... Hehe.

And the other Britpop bands that make such an effort? I am a huge Oasis fan but they can't compare overall. Coldplay were right up there initially but then they seemed to go into arena rock a bit..... who else compares ????

I really can't help you out here. I'm not familiar with either bands work.... I haven't been in a music shop since the Talking Heads broke up and disbanded.
... However, early King Crimson, Genesis and Yes have the "classical" Beatles sound that you were referring to in that Beatles vs. Rolling Stones post.

Squeeze is a great band with great songs.... they were pegged as Lennon-McCartney but stopped writing hit songs! Pulling muscles from a shell is terrific. One of the members lives in the south of England with a nice recording studio. They just could not live up to all the hype.....

My brother went and saw it earlier this year. He loved it. I mentioned it in a thread somewhere on the board. He gave me a copy of the soundtrack on CD. Great music. George Martin took the whole Beatles catalog of master tapes and interspersed songs together so that they run-on to each other in a collage or medley of sorts.

Here's a medley from the "Love" soundtrack. Check out the different songs that Sir George Martin combined into one. Drive My Car/What You're Doing/ The Word and he even throws in the lead guitar to "Taxman" in there. I love this track.
