AuSteve - time to get the shrimp on the barbie, mate... I recalled the above from a note somewhere but here is the detail on John Lennon;

From The Quarrymen to The Beatles: 1957–70

The Quarrymen, which he established at the age of 16 in March 1957. The earlier band name was inspired by that of the Liverpool school he and other members attended, Quarry Bank High School Lennon first met Paul McCartney on 6 July at The Quarrymen's second concert, held in Woolton at the St. Peter's Church garden fête. McCartney joined The Quarrymen. His father told him that Lennon would get him "into a lot of trouble", but later allowed the band to rehearse in the front room at 20 Forthlin Road, where Lennon and McCartney began writing songs together.

"Two Of Us" --- is about John and Paul's first meeting during that Sunday in St. Peter's Church in Liverpool. Later Paul brought his guitar to see John. John, after hearing Paul play, accepted Paul into the band. Then Paul brought George in.

This is also where Paul rehearsed this song with George about fifteen times in the Let It Be film. He kept asking George to play it properly and as such Paul was not very happy with George's playing and he was not very tolerant of George .... It lead to this famous exchange between the two:

Here Paul McCartney says [to George] I'm not trying to get you. But I really am trying to just say, "Look, lads- the band, you know. Shall we... try it like this, you know?"

Then George Harrison says [to Paul] Yeah, okay, well, I don't mind. I'll play, you know, whatever you want me to play. Or I won't play at all if you don't want me to play, you know. Whatever it is that'll please you, I'll do it.

Eventually Paul picks up an acoustic guitar and he authorized that most of George's lead guitar riffs be taken out of Phil Spector's master tapes. George then leaves the studio for about an hour and a half....

And the heated exchange in the beginning of this clip:

Not very pleasant. if you ask me. It's not a tribute. And it should not be construed as such.

Torp, I stand corrected - what you say is spot on! The first incarnation of the QuarryMen in 1955 had 7 members in it including John Lennon as its leader. There were numerous personnel changes in the next couple of years so the lineup with Paul and George in it were together in 1957 and 1958 until they drifted apart. The break-up was short-lived; George was playing with the Les Stewart Quartet until that group fell apart in 1959 when John, Paul and George re-united to form what became The Beatles as we know it.

Steve, time to hoist one :D

Around the last time, it would be the "silver beatles" although JnY will correct us :D if we are off....

Pete Best who I have come to know when he tours Mass., is one that has kept the early music alive and well.

JnY - your right. I'll bet there were lots of pissing contests between this group and the egos of McCartney and Lennon especially when Yoko came on the scene.

I'd still like to have a copy of that 45rpm though!

We'd all be eating shrimp on the barbie, mates! :D

Thought I'd bump this thread up again since the 2 surviving Beatles have celebrated Birthdays :bdaycake: since the previous post on here.

Ringo Starr reached his milestone 70th Birthday on 7 July 2010
&
Sir Paul McCartney had his 68th Birthday on 18 June 2010.

August 17 1960 is a significant date in Fab 4 History as it was 50 years ago today that the Beatles first performed in Hamburg, Germany. They appeared at the Indra Club as a 5-piece group (John, Paul, George, Pete Best & Stuart Sutcliffe).

FYI, Stuart Sutcliffe played bass guitar with the Beatles in 1960 but left the group late that year to stay with his GF Astrid Kirchher in Germany when the others returned to England. He died of a brain haemorrhage on 10 April 1962 aged just 21.

Here's a video of the group members along with their wives, John Lennon and Yoko Ono, Paul McCartney and Linda Eastman, George Harrison and Patti Boyd, and Richard Starkey and Maureen Cox... accompanied in an acoustic guitar version of George Harrison's "Something" recorded in July 1969. It's rare footage...

Thanks for the clip, John. there was a movie 10 - 15 years ago about Paul and Linda, how they met, how they lived and how she died. I can't remember the name. It might have been a "made for TV" thing. Any ideas, John?

When we love someone famous, it is easy to forget that they are just people, like us. They live, they love , they laugh, and, yes, they hurt. They are not invincible. They lose people they love, they get shot and, yes, they die from cancer or other terrible things. And, at one time, the Beatles were a wonderful thing.

I know the BBC did a 90 minute interview with Linda and Paul together. This was when Linda was first diagnosed with breast cancer. She appears healthy during the interview. Over here, ABC TV combined parts of that BBC interview with an interview that ABC News they themselves did when Paul and Linda were in the southwestern United States looking for treatment. Either Charles Gibson or Diane Sawyer may have conducted the interview. Try googling Paul McCartney Linda Eastman hospice in Tuscon Arizona (maybe Phoenix or Scottsdale Arizona as well). As that is where she passed at home with Paul, daughters Mary, Stella, and Heather and son James at her bedside.

Maybe it was a documentary, I really don't remember. but, Paul and Linda were in it, so that kind of points away from a movie.

Getting In Early Here as today Saturday October 9th 2010 is a major day in the Lennon Family :-

John Lennon would have celebrated his 70th Birthday today had he not been tragically cut down in his prime :bdaycake:

John's second son Sean is celebrating his 35th Birthday today also :bdaycake: :drinker:

Today is also my younger brother's Birthday as well. John is my favourite Beatle so today is a solemn day for me :bdaycake:

:offtopic:

October 9th was also the late John Entwistle's birthday as well. He was the Who's great bass guitarist.

Just this week the FBI seized a John Lennon fingerprint card that was signed by him as he was gaining entry in the US some many years ago. Seems they can't fathom how a state controlled document made it's way to Gotta Have it in Manhattan which had an opening bid price of $100k. Seems the well known, as yet unidentified consignor, has some questions to answer.

And yes, we all know that famous picture that came about as a result of this, of him standing outside of Liberty Island, flashing the peace sign in front of the Statue of Liberty.....

Then about eighteen months later, they (J. Edgar Hoover and the FBI) tried to kick him out of this country because of the 1968 marijuana conviction that he had over in England. ... :wtf:

JnY - that's why the feds are so interested as who knows how many other state secrets are on the loose. Good ole JEdgar - had a 3x5 on just about everyone.... Now that is a card file I'd like to have.

I've never been fond of Ono as I still think she was part and partial to expediting the split of the LADs.

Back today from vacation  Big Hello to everyone in the VNA :bluewink:

Glad to be back amongst you once more on this day of reflection on the Life of John Ono Lennon (the most influential musical figure of the last half century)
After hearing his song Come Together on radio today it brought tears to my eyes :whome: (I hope Mark Chapman is never released from prison)

PS. Maybe people in this world fighting wars should think of these 2 songs :-

Give Peace A Chance & Happy Christmas (War Is Over) :blablabla:
