Heavy rain in some parts of Germany, up to 250 liters per square meter on a single day. If I converted that correctly, that's 66 gallons per 10 sq ft in just 24 hours. I'm lucky, the weather here is alright but just 100 miles from where I live, entire towns are destroyed, the military is involved to help. Crazy, that some people still think that climate change is a hoax.

Same thing over here in some locations. People's lives severely uprooted. Same with massive forest fires going on now in the West.

She is probably asleep now, but I was talking to her earlier today. She says she lives on high ground, so isn't worried for herself. Others, tho? It's like you see on the news..
I"m sure she'll check in tomorrow with an update.

Thank you for asking, but I'm safe and the area where I live is safe geographically! But as I wrote in my previous post, 100 miles from here, entire towns were destroyed by the water. Especially towns located in valleys were affected, the water build up and tiny creeks turned into water masses. 150 people are dead, hundreds are still missing. Many people lost everything and it's unlikely that they can return, there are talks about abandoning certain areas, because it's too dangerous to go back, the infrastructure is destroyed, the water supplies are contaminated.

Now that most of the water is gone in the majority of places, authorities are currently trying to measure the dimensions of the damage. People are returning to their towns if they can.
Even (chancellor) Merkel said that "The German language hardly knows any words" for this level of destruction when she went to one of the most affected areas yesterday and she's not easily shocked.
But the solidarity is immense, people are really helping each other.

Disasters bring out the best and the worst in people. Wouldn't it be amazing if we could all pull together like that all the time? Unfortunate that it takes a disaster to remind us all that deep down we are all one people and we all love each other and really do want to help each other rebuild.
I'm sure there will be funds set up to take donations as well? This is such a great example of a worthwhile cause that I would donate to Versus some of the things that I have seen on gofundme lately.

I'm glad to hear you're safe Liz. We get inured to seeing pictures like this from around the world, (even places here in North America), but somehow think of Europe as being immune to this sort of natural disaster.LizLemon85 wrote: ↑July 18th, 2021, 2:56 am Thank you for asking, but I'm safe and the area where I live is safe geographically! At this time, all I can say and hope for is that the death toll is not as high as the current count of missing people. God bless to everyone there, and stay safe.

The government already promised to pay 300 millions (Euro) immediately, but that's far from enough.
They are at least partially responsible for the high death toll, among other things, the warning system didn't work at all, despite forecasts 4 days before the disaster.
People could have fled and could've saved some of their belongings.
Some people have insurances that cover natural disasters, but a lot of people don't, because they are too expensive if you live in an area with a high risk for flooding,
I think the government will cover some of their expenses.
Hopefully people will realize now that climate change is real.

Sadly they won't, they will insist that this is all totally natural and that it's a cycle and it happens regardless of what man does.......
Just like they say all the red tide / dead fish here in Florida right now that are floating to the surface of the ocean is totally natural - I'm not kidding, there's areas you can't even go outside.... People are getting sick from it, 600 tons of dead fish on the local beaches,, I'm not exaggerating........ 80 pound groupers floating up and rotting in the sun... it's 90 here everyday........... It's disgusting...... people with respiratory conditions can't go outside at all.
.......not to mention that 800 manatees have already died here in Florida this year alone because they are starving to death, because there is no more sea grass for them to eat, thats all they eat and all the sea grass has died from pollution. To make things worse our governor just took manatees off the endangered list. God only knows why...... To help industry pollute the water more I suppose.... Business is all that matters...... So stupid because manatees attract so many tourists and tourism is huge in Florida...... Sometimes these polititions bite their nose off to spite their face.... sorry I seem to be off on another rant..... lol..
Maybe I'm just drinking too much coffeeeeeeeeee...... see you at 5!

And in Canada polar bears starve because the melting ice shelf means they can't get to the seals that are their food source. And herds of caribou have to be fed by rangers. The vegetation they rely on is still there, but precipitation now comes down in the form of ice rather than snow. They can see their food trapped under a sheet of ice, but can't get to it.stickyvicky wrote: ↑July 19th, 2021, 3:29 pm Sadly they won't, they will insist that this is all totally natural and that it's a cycle and it happens regardless of what man does.......

I would feel bad for anyone in a flood no matter what country they are from it's devastating and disgusting...... So many wild creatures like snakes and alligators in the water too too not to mention how dirty it is is and how sick you can get by swallowing it by mistake...

We have the world's third largest supply of freshwater in Canada and we have a water shortage??!!
I read a story on CNN today about water theft becoming a serious problem in California. I though this was something that only happened in shanty towns in underdeveloped countries.
