Happy to say I did my first half marathon (13.1 miles or 21km) race over the weekend...
It was a struggle towards the end but completed it...
One year ago I was remember being happy when I was able to routinely do 3 miles...
There have been a few bumps in the road but the good news is out of all the things I've done, running is the best for cardio out of all of them...

Remember this one Dave? I didn't run, but I walked a good race. 3 Km? a 5K run or a 3K walk, I seem to remember. And Sara STILL beat me, LOL.

Good for you, Rokkerr. Way to go. I don't think I would ever try anything more than 10Krokkerr wrote: ↑February 29th, 2024, 11:21 am Happy to say I did my first half marathon (13.1 miles or 21km) race over the weekend...

I was trying to get better at 10K's by running a bit longer -- 9-10 miles (a 15k)lance_s wrote: ↑February 29th, 2024, 6:10 pmGood for you, Rokkerr. Way to go. I realized that a half marathon is basically 'just' another 5K it seemed doable... so I signed up and trained per an online training schedule...
I did a half marathon as a practice so I thought I was fine but race conditions were more stressful (up early, a lot of people)
I just ran out of stamina right around 10 miles or so... I finished and ran the entire 13.1 but I wasn't happy with my time...
I'm glad I did it... but I won't make a habit of it... my goal is to do a 10K under an hour easily before I stretch any more limits...
I did do 3 10K's last week and that distance is getting easier for me...

And after you master that one, try joggling (juggling while running a marathon):

You're obviously a better runner than I am. I know I could improve, but I would need to create and following a training regime. I run 5 times a week, but it is social, so each run is at the slowest person's pace. I think I may set up a more structured routine starting April. Large races (lots of people) can be very offputting. I don't like the big runs that attract 1000's. I find the smaller runs to be much more fun.

Hi Rokker, Check out https://www.parkrun.com/ . There is a run at Weedon Island.
You get statistics on your run compared with runners from around the world, so its a realistic metric of how well you're doing on an age/gender basis.
One of my clients helps organize it in a suburb of Ottawa. I will go once in a while to see how well I'm doing and how much (if any) progress I'm making.

Update on my hamstrings! I have done shock wave therapy twice now, and they did dextrose injections before I left for Italy. The purpose of the dextrose is to aggravate the muscle to cause inflammation which promotes healing. I can confirm that it did aggravate lol.
This is a good break for me, because I needed to scale back on the PT and the workouts, apparently I wasn't doing my hamstrings any favors.
So this vacation will have a lot of walking and that is a good thing! I will post Italy pictures in a new thread!
I'm so jealous of everyone running! I miss it like crazy! It clears your mind! Soon!

Been battling a bad cold for 2 weeks so no running for me unfortunately.... but the time off is probably good to give the ankles some healing time...
I'll be back at it this weekend I hope...
