I don't know much about all that stuff. I seem to think that cardio is like your lungs. Weight training, of course, works your muscles. To me, cardio is working your lungs and stamina. And, both are important. Do I need to readjust my thinking?? I do know, st1fler, that many 'exercise guru's' recommend a well-rounded routine.hotjulie wrote:St1fler I know you just want to pump iron, but if you ain't doing cardio and lots of it with the shape your in your missing the big picture my friend! Anything I've read in Mucsle Mag or whatever by guys like Arnie, Lee Priest etc there workouts have loads of cardio. Then again maybe there all wrong I don't claim to know a lot! I love to work my legs, abs, arms ass whatever too it feels good, just you need the full deal; my opinion

Just got to this thread. I didn't get the bad vibes from st1flers comment. Maybe he didn't remember or wasn't even really aware of what Julie went thru. And, maybe it just didn't occurr to him, the relationship between 500 meters in 9 minutes and her health issues. I didn't catch it at first, until I read further down.
By the way, 1 meter is 3' 3" and a bit. Therefore, 500m is roughly 1625 feet. 1320' is 1/4 mile. Given Julie's recovery, she is doing the right thing, sounds like.
But, I don't think Stiffy was trying to be mean, hurtful or derogatory. I think he might have simply missed a 'connection.'
Lets be friends, people.

Not running is killing me! Since I had my knee drained on friday, the doc said no running till thursday! Damn, you get used to it, and really miss how good it makes you feel! So the first day I'm allowed to run is thanksgiving day, and HRL and I are going to run a little 5K race together and then come back to the house where Rokkerr is cooking dinner! Wish me luck! At least my legs will be fresh!

I don't think we have to tell you anymore how to take care of your knee, I'm sure you're doing the right things. But, make it a short, slow, run (5K?) And, if you feel any pain at all, STOP!

Ok, i have been WAY WAY lazy this week. Too much work and not enough working out. I need to find some local cougars to burn some calories with... Vicky when can you start running again?
I have a book by Bob Paris called Flawless (he's a bodybuilder) . The book covers just about everything from muscle movement, proper form, eating clean anything you really should know. There's a 10 week beginers program to programs for experts and he talks loads about cardio but then he was only a Mr Universe you can't expect him to know that's not recomended
One thing I suggest is a weekly log keep in it weight, body size (chest, bicepts flexed, waist thighs and calfs)

Good for you Tribe! It's hard isn't it? I ran in the gym today on the treadmill, soooo boring, but it has it's upside, I love being able to set the speed and not have to think about it. When running outside, i think i speed up slow down speed up slow down. The treadmill is good cause you have no choice but to keep up! Then if you can find something interesting on the tv to watch the time goes by faster. Today I set it on a comfortable 6 miles per hour and ran a little over half an hour. I am going to start a log too Julie, that's a great idea to motivate. I do good for a while, and I do see results, but then get distracted or can't run for some reason. You wouldn't think being off for a week or 10 days would be that bad but it is. It completely throws me off and it's like starting over again...

Thanks Vette and good for you getting back on it.. I hope you knee holds up... It is hard. I think it is more of a mental thing than anything else to get started... Positive thoughts people. Tell your mind you wanna get up and work up and it shall be so...

I think routine is very important too, you need to work out the same time each day, if you have a routine, there is more chance you will stick to it.
So I'd like my routine to be: get up early and either run, or go to the gym. problem is I sleep late, cause I can never got off the damn computer! like right now, lol it's 12:30 and I'm trying to catch up on posts. And tomorrow is shot because I have to go the doctor at 9, and then to a funeral at 10:30. Then out to lunch and some other appointments after that. I supposed if I was really dedicated I'd still work out in the eveing when I got back from atlanta, but being out all day, I have to catch on what ever computer stuff needs to be done, like updating my site or sasha's site... lol.. there's just not enough hours in a day. So like I say, routine, that is the ticket.

That's so awesome Tribe, be as consistant as you can. Jumping rope is really good I bet your legs were burning that's what you want is the burn. Not so much that you can't work out for a week. I've never tried yoga or had any intrest in it but hell if you like it DO IT!
6 miles Vicky that's really good what I like about a treadmill is you can set the angle and the speed. Like you said find something to watch and it goes by fast. The log book keeps a person accountable and you can see the results of your efforts. With Christmas coming I know it gets really hard to stay focused, damn I love chocolate lol

I don't remember it being noticeable when I was younger, but I find that, as you get older, if you are into an exercise routine and you stop, it seems to be harder, physically, to get started again. In my case, the muscles hurt more and it's harder to get back to the same level.
I can resist everything except temptation.
I started a workout program for myself. Cardio and weight resistance, my doctor looked it over and said go for it. I,ve gone back to square one with my program this is as beginner as I can get. So this is what I did:
Days 1.. 3..5 I did weights
Flat bench press 2 sets 15-20 reps
low-pully rows 2 sets 15-20 reps
Barbell press behind neck 2 sets 15-20 reps
Barbell Curls 2 sets 15-20 reps
Tricep Pushdowns 2 sets 15-20 reps
Leg presses 2 sets 15-20 reps
Lying Leg Curls 2 sets 15-20 reps
Leg-Press Raises 2 sets 15-20 reps
Crunchs 2 sets 15-20 reps
Dumbbell Wrist Curls 2 sets 15-20 reps
Cardio days 1..2...6....7 I did it at a moderatr level (with your pulse at a 65 to 70 percent level) for 15 to 20 minutes. I used a bike and a treadmill I walked!
If your just starting or haven't done it for a long time keep the weights low or you'll be sorry! I used an empty bar at first all you want to do is learn how to move the weights right. Crunchs are a differant story you can do them till you have nothing left they recover very fast. Don't forget to stretch all your muscles. I stretch before I start and between sets. When you move to the stretched position, extend the muscle being stretched till it's taut. Hold that for a few seconds, then stretch a bit farther and hold that for 20-30 seconds. You will not get any benifit holding it for 4-5 seconds then moving on. Just take deep breaths and be patient. Hold your srtetches and don't bounce!!!!
Have fun doing it don't say I have to work out tell yourself I get to workout
