All other music
and BTW, do you know where we get the expression "It's cold enough for Brass Monkeys" or "the balls off a brass monkey"?
Freeze the balls off a brass monkey? I don't think I've heard that expression since I left Blighty. I'll let you explain it to the colonials....

I had never heard of the "Golden Rivet" fool's errand.
Colonials?! Aren't you one of the colonials yourself? Or did you not give up your British citizenship?
Speaking of the "differences in English" subthread of the "All other music" thread, here is the YouTube channel of Lawrence Brown, who moved to America from England. His whole channel is dedicated to the subject.

Also, he has an alternate channel called "The Whisker Reel" dedicated to his cat.

As for brass monkeys and cold weather, I had heard the expression but never looked up the origins. Wikipedia believes it to be related to tourist souvenirs of the Japanese Three Wise Monkeys cast in brass. For one, I didn't know the "See/Hear/Speak No Evil" monkeys were Japanese. Wikipedia also claims that an alternate explanation relating to cannonball trays on warships has been discredited by The U.S. Navy, The Oxford English Dictionary, and an etymologist named Michael Quinion.

For me the cannon balls on old ships is the true version - don't believe what you read!ErikB wrote: ↑May 11th, 2021, 2:24 pmI had never heard of the "Golden Rivet" fool's errand.

I was told it on HMS Victory in Portsmouth Dockyard (and it also featured in a dictionary of RN slang/sayings that used to be sold in the RN Museum).
Here was certainly a sin worth sinning and I applied myself with characteristic vigour to its practice

"Aren't I one of the colonials..." I say, old chap, do let me explain, he says, giving his monocole a good wipe and casually flicking in back into his eye. Actually I'm originally from India. India was not a colony, it was the crown jewel of the Raj. It attracted the best and brightest of the Empire. The second stringers managed the home country. And the colonies got the left over riff-raff. This is well documented by the late C. Northcote Parkinson, I believe in his book Inlaws and Outlaws.ErikB wrote: ↑May 11th, 2021, 2:24 pm

Oh, and as for brass monkeys, I'm with Peter on accepting the naval explanation.

I have an amazing connection to this song, it is not easy when you are going through an abusive relationship whether it is physical or mental abuse

What am I doing here - the same as everyone else, working, getting laid off, getting married, getting divorced, raising a family, worrying about money, worrying about retirement, dreaming of a $10 million dollar lottery windfall. ($ 1 million doesn't cut it any more, inflation, y'know). I've been here since the late 70s.ErikB wrote: ↑May 13th, 2021, 1:13 amApologies, m'lud. You waxed so nostalgic about India and the Empire that, for some reason, I translated that into you being a recent arrival to Canada. Sorry!

Then there is Clannad, which I learned of from a car commercial featuring this song:

And then there's House of Pain, which is from Los Angeles and is only 2/3 Irish-American (and 1/3 Latvian-American)

From this article:

We caught up with Everlast and asked him what it was like breaking through in the world of hip hop at a time when acts like Public Enemy were putting a sharp focus on race in America. Everlast told us the idea to form House of Pain actually came about while watching the Public Enemy rapper Professor Griff.
EVERLAST (Hip hop artist): It was one particular Public Enemy show that, you know, Griff was on one that night and like, you know, going on a tirade about the white people. And we loved Public Enemy and that night we just felt a little alienated by the whole thing, so we just kind of were like all right, we're going to make this House of Pain thing and we're going to talk about being Irish.

If you like Irish music check out this lot - a bit long in the tooth now, but a great set of musicians and brothers (except Davey Arthur who is a brilliant Scottish banjo player)ErikB wrote: ↑May 14th, 2021, 2:30 pmI don't think I ever knew that song was The Corrs. I hate Scottish bagpipes (always sound like a dying animal!0, but the Irish pipes are something else - they make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up, and you can drink whilst playing them.
I chose this one of theirs because as yer man says, it IS the greatest anti-war song ever (although The Pogues Gallipoli deserves an honourable mention).

Thanks! I did not know this type of bagpipe existed. I actually have a CD of the Edinburgh Military Tattoo. Now I will have to find one for Uilleann pipes (or make one from YouTube videos). Since you mentioned that the player can drink while playing, I'll start off with the fun:

However, I found some cool videos, one on Uilleann pipes and another on Northumbrian smallpipes.

Nightwish is my favorite favorite band (they're a symphonic metal band btw)!
I had the pleasure to see them live about 2 years ago, it was amazing, they're doing a virtual concert at the end of this month.
They did an epic show at Wacken in 2013 in front of about 80.000 people:
And another one with more of Troy (solo at the 3:30 mark):
I also blame them for my broken English :
(sorry for fan girling, but this is one of the few things I'm really enthusiastic about)

Having too much sex can cause memory loss. I read that on page 69 in a medical journal on the 4th of May in 2008.
