I also thought this was a hilarious perspective. Although, the act of dying painfully while being cut off from God's light is supposed to be the payment, I think. I am not formally a Christian at this point, and haven't read the bible, so I don't know what the different variations on Christianity have to say on this. I know Mick Jagger mentioned it in a song:
